Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (1-1) pulled away with a six-run seventh inning in a 12-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds (1-1) before a crowd of 5,305 Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Aneury Rodriguez (1-0) dealt five innings with three earned runs, seven hits, one walk and nine strikeouts in the winning decision. The right-hander dealt 94 pitches, 64 for strikes. Memphis starter Brandon Broderick (0-1) pitched four innings, giving up six earned runs, eight hits, one walk and four strikeouts in the losing decision.
In the first inning, following back-to-back singles, Fernando Martinez (1) belted a home run off the right field upper deck for a 3-0 Oklahoma City lead. The RedHawks extended the lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a Mike Hessman sacrifice fly and a Brett Wallace RBI single.
Memphis countered in the third inning when Matt Adams (2) hit a two-out, two-run home run onto the centerfield berm for a 5-2 score. The Redbirds added a third run in the fifth inning when Amaury Cazana hit a sacrifice fly and scored Adron Chambers for a 5-3 game.
In the RedHawks' fifth inning, Hessman led off with a double and scored on a Wallace double off the bullpen gate in left-centerfield for a 6-3 lead.
The RedHawks put the game out of reach in the seventh inning with six runs, five earned, off reliever Maikel Cleto. After a walk, single and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Carlos Corporan singled in a run for a 7-3 score. J.B. Shuck next took a bases loaded walk for an 8-3 advantage. Justin Ruggiano next singled in a pair of runs and opened a 10-3 game. An Angel Sanchez infield hit combined with a throwing error brought in an 11th run before a Diory Hernandez sacrifice fly plated Ruggiano for the 12-3 final score.
Memphis left 13 runners on base and finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The RedHawks and Redbirds meet for series game three Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Oklahoma City LH Dallas Keuchel will face Memphis RH Joe Kelly.
