Game 25 | May 3, 2010, 6:35 pm CDT | Rosenblatt Stadium | Omaha, NE
1340 AM Fox Sports, RedHawks Radio Network | Play-by-Play: Jim Byers
RH Tommy Hunter (no record) vs. RH Philip Humber (1-2, 5.56)
TONIGHT: The Oklahoma City RedHawks begin their second road trip of the year with the first of 4 against the Omaha Royals (Kansas City Royals). The trip continues later this week with a 4-game set at Iowa. OKC has lost 2 straight for just the second time all season, dropping an 8-7 decision yesterday to New Orleans to split a 4-game series. The RedHawks have the PCL's third-best record at 15-9 and sit atop the American South Division by 1 game over Albuquerque. Omaha is second, 4.5 games back of Nashville in the American North. Tommy Hunter makes his first start of the year at any level tonight against Omaha's Philip Humber.
LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT: The RedHawks let a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning slip away yesterday, only to rally from an 8-4 deficit in the ninth for 3 runs in an 8-7 loss to New Orleans. OKC had its first 6 batters in the ninth inning collect singles to draw within 1 run, but former RedHawk Jose Veras, who was called in to replace Kasey Olenberger after the first 5 singles, preserved New Orleans' lead by inducing a 2-out liner from Taylor Teagarden to strand the bases loaded. OKC has dropped its last 4 series finales and is 1-5 in the final game of a series this season. The RedHawks have won 3 series and split 3.
SETTING THE PACE: OKC leads the PCL with 146 runs, 12 more than second place Albuquerque. While going 5-3 on the just-concluded homestand, OKC out-scored the opposition 67-40. The RedHawks lead the league in home runs (27), triples (13), on-base percentage (.368) and are second in slugging (.475) and team batting (.293).
FROM THE MOUND: OKC's ERA has risen the last 2 games from 2.97 to 3.26 by allowing 13 earned runs in the two losses. The current ERA remains second behind Nashville's 2.82. Even after allowing 28 hits in the past 2 games, the RedHawks maintain the league's second-lowest WHIP (walks + hits per innings pitched) at 1.22. Derek Holland leads the PCL in ERA at 0.53, while Michael Kirkman is eighth at 2.12. Brandon McCarthy, on the DL with a stress reaction in his right shoulder, is 10th at 2.51.
LEADERS: Chad Tracy is tied with Las Vegas' Brett Wallace for the PCL lead in both total bases (57) and extra-base hits (14). Tracy is second in the league in RBIs (21) and hits (30), while tied for third in homers (6) and fourth in slugging (.648). Esteban German is tied for the lead in runs scored with 20.
STREAKERS: Jarrod Saltalamacchia owns a 9-game hitting streak, the best by a RedHawk this year. During the streak, Saltalamacchia is 15-for-36 (.417) with 3 homers and 9 RBIs. Chad Tracy has a 16-game on-base streak, matching the PCL's longest of the year and the best currently active.
ODDS AND ENDS: RedHawks hitters amassed 17 hits yesterday, their second-highest total of the season behind Friday's 18...OKC pitching has allowed a season-high 14 hits in each of the last 2 games...the Zephyrs scored 8 runs in each of the last 2 games after totaling 4 runs in the series' first 2 contests...yesterday's 7 runs were the most by the RedHawks in a loss this year...OKC has made 10 errors in its last 5 games, going 2-3 in that span while allowing 10 unearned runs.
HOLLAND'S ERA RANKING: Derek Holland's 0.53 ERA ranks fourth in all of professional baseball (majors and minors) to this point in the season among those with enough innings to qualify.
