Memphis Redbirds News Release

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A five-run deficit after two innings proved to be too much for the Memphis Redbirds in a 7-5 loss to the Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A Angels) Tuesday night in Salt Lake City.

Memphis came all the way back to within a run, though, but the lack of eighth-inning production moved the Redbirds to 17-25 on the season. Salt Lake improves to 25-18.

The Redbirds have allowed 17 runs in the first three innings of the first two games of the series, and Memphis stranded 10 runners on base Tuesday night and was 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Dean Anna and Patrick Wisdom combined for four hits and three runs batted in Tuesday night, and Greg Garcia also had two hits. Both of Wisdom's hits were doubles, and Garcia added a triple.

The Redbirds fell behind 6-1 after two innings, with Jeremy Hefner being victim of an error and some defensive lapses in a five-run second inning. But Hefner battled and got through six innings on the night, facing just two over the minimum in the third-through-sixth frames. He allowed two singles in those four innings, allowing the Redbird offense time to chip away.

The Redbirds added two in the third inning to make the score 6-3, but Memphis was quiet in the middle innings until a two-run eighth inning. Corey Littrell relieved Hefner in the seventh and struck out the side. In five appearances in Memphis after being transferred from Double-A Springfield, Littrell has worked 6.2 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

In the eighth, Memphis scored two runs and had a chance for more, but the Redbirds could not capitalize and still trailed 6-5 after eight at-bats. Anna singled home Nick Martini, who doubled to start the inning, to make it 6-4, and Anna then scored when Wisdom doubled. The Redbirds loaded the bases with no outs, but a lineout, a force out and a strikeout ended the Memphis threat and kept the score 6-5 in favor of Salt Lake.

The Bees got an insurance run off Sam Tuivailala in the home-half of the eighth to make the score 7-5, and Memphis went down in order in the ninth to end the ballgame.

Hefner took the loss and is 2-3 on the season.

Memphis' eight-game road trip continues tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. (CT) with game three of a four-game series at Salt Lake. The Redbirds play four games at Las Vegas this weekend before returning to AutoZone Park for four games May 31-June 3. The Tuesday-Friday homestand features King Cotton $1 Hot Dog Night on May 31, College Night on June 2 and a Replica Cardinals 1946 World Series Ring giveaway on June 3.
