Memphis Redbirds News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - David Washington led the Memphis (18-25) offense tonight with a pair of two-run homers and four runs batted in to deliver Salt Lake City (25-19) its first lost of the road series, 9-7.
Washington has now hit safely in 15-of-18 games with the Redbirds and has a team leading seven home runs, is hitting .328 and has a .710 SLG on the year.
Arturo Reyes collected his fourth win as a starter this season, tossing 6.0 innings and giving up just three runs on seven hits while striking out four. This is Reyes' fourth win in his last five starts and is the fifth time this season he has not given up more than three runs in an outing. Reyes leads the Memphis starting rotation with four wins.
Anthony Garcia also had a great night at the plate going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. He collected a season high of 4 RBI in his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Charlie Tilson and Jonathan Rodriguez both had a pair of hits on the night and combined to go 4-for-9. Rodriguez picked up an RBI in the top of the seventh after hitting Patrick Wisdom in on his sixth double of the year to give him 21 RBI in 37 games played.
Ryan Sherriff was able to back Reyes' strong performance on the mound by giving up no runs and just one hit in two innings of work. In 17 appearances this season, Sherriff has given up just 10 runs on 14 hits and has struck out 22.
Despite Salt Lake scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth, Juan Gonzalez was able to get his third save of the year.
Memphis will play their series finale in Salt Lake City tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. (CT). Then, the Redbirds will play four games at Las Vegas this weekend before returning to AutoZone Park for four games May 31-June 3. The Tuesday-Friday homestand features King Cotton $1 Hot dog Night on May 31, College Night on June 2 and a Replica Cardinals 1946 World Series Ring giveaway on June 3.
