Iowa Cubs News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (43-59) dropped their fourth straight contest with a 5-1 loss to the Memphis Redbirds (48-51), Sunday at AutoZone Park. Iowa was outhit 12-6 with Jeimer Candelario snagging two of Iowa's hits on the night.

Iowa grabbed the first lead with a run in the opening frame. Mark Zagunis drilled a two-out triple and came in to score on a single from Tim Federowicz. That would be the only damage the I-Cubs would do on Memphis starter Arturo Reyes as the righty went five innings, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out four to improve to 6-4 on the season.

I-Cubs starter Drew Rucinski (5-10) got off to a shaky start, allowing a two-run homer to Anthony Garcia in the first inning to quickly put Memphis ahead. Rucinski was ultimately tagged with the loss, exiting after four innings and allowing three runs in his 20th start of the season.

Iowa was held hitless through the next five frames, while Memphis extended its lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth. The I-Cubs got their offense going again in the seventh as Candelario and Juan Perez drilled back-to-back singles, but Taylor Davis grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep Iowa off the board.

Memphis followed suit in the seventh, but was able to come away with two runs to show for its offensive production. David Washington blasted his 18th homer of the season to give the Redbirds two insurance runs.

Munenori Kawasaki doubled in the eighth, but that would be the only peep for the visitors as they went quietly in the final frames.

Iowa and Memphis play the series finale at 7:05 p.m. CT Monday at AutoZone Park. Listen live on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
