Memphis Redbirds News Release

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - The Memphis Redbirds pulled within a run after facing a three-plus run deficit on two separate occasions, but the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A Rockies) finished the four-game sweep with a 7-6 win Sunday night in New Mexico.

The Redbirds (45-48) were swept in the first series after the All-Star Break despite scoring 27 runs on 48 hits in the series. Albuquerque (41-53) has now won seven-straight games.

The Redbirds fell behind from the get-go, trailing 3-0 after an inning of play. But in what became a theme for the night, the Redbirds kept battling and got within 3-2 after a Jacob Wilson two-run home run in the top of the second.

In addition to the homer, Wilson had two singles on the night for his fourth three-hit game of the season.

The Isotopes plated four runs in the bottom of the third to lead 7-2, but the Redbirds shut down the Albuquerque offense in the middle innings after that. Deck McGuire's final inning of work featured a walk, a wild pitch and a double, but McGuire did not break and got a groundout and two flyouts to escape the frame.

Kurt Heyer and Corey Littrell were perfect in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, which bookended Memphis' big sixth inning. After an out to start the inning, David Washington homered to make it 7-3, and Wilson and Breyvic Valera singled and walked, respectively. Mike Ohlman promptly blasted a three-run home run to left-center field, and all of the sudden the Redbirds were within a run at 7-6.

Washington has 21 home runs on the season between Memphis and Double-A Springfield, which leads the entire St. Louis Cardinals organization.

But the Redbirds could not complete the comeback and left five runners on base in the final three innings and were swept by the Isotopes. The four losses mark the first time Memphis was swept in a four-game series since July 16-19, 2015 at Iowa.

Heyer, Littrell and Juan Gonzalez did not allow a hit and just one baserunner total in the final four frames.

The Redbirds are off to El Paso for four contests tomorrow-Thursday and return to AutoZone Park for eight games against Iowa and Oklahoma City starting Friday. The upcoming homestand features a Redbirds Stephen Piscotty bobblehead gate giveaway and postgame fireworks on Saturday; a kids lunchbox giveaway on Sunday; and Hunting and Fishing Night that includes a camouflage Redbirds hat with a Theme Ticket purchase, as well as a Replica Cardinals 1926 World Series Ring gate giveaway, on Friday the 29th.
