July 16, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Round Rock Express
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds (59-33) scored seven runs in the first three innings en route to a lopsided 9-1 victory over the Round Rock Express (41-52) on Saturday night at AutoZone Park.
E-Train starter RHP Clayton Blackburn (3-2, 6.00) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings. The righty walked two and struck out six. On the winning side, Memphis RHP Luke Weaver (8-1, 1.92) limited Round Rock to just one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out six without allowing a walk.
The Redbirds jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning as SS Aledmys Diaz collected a one-out single prior to a booming two-run Carson Kelly homer that put the home side up 2-0.
Memphis doubled their lead in the second inning. CF Harrison Bader recorded a leadoff single before promptly stealing second base. Two more singles courtesy of 3B Patrick Wisdom and 2B Alex Mejia forced another run home. Diaz then made it 4-0 with an RBI single that scored Wisdom.
In the third, Kelly and RF Adolis Garcia teamed up to manufacture a pair of walks to open the frame. After a Bader double that scored Garcia, DH Breyvic Valera delivered a two-run single that upped the gap to 7-0.
Round Rock's lone run came in the fourth inning as 1B Ronald Guzman sent a one-out double into center field to end Weaver's early no-hit bid. SS Jurickson Profar followed up with a long single that left enough time for Guzman to race home.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Memphis tacked on two more runs in the seventh. With two outs in the inning, LHP Adam Loewen lost control of a 1-2 pitch, hitting Valera. The mistake proved to be costly as Wisdom blasted a two-run homer that pushed his team's advantage to 9-1.
The Express and Redbirds close out their season series on Sunday afternoon. Round Rock RHP David Ledbetter (2-1, 4.22) is set to face off against Memphis RHP Jack Flaherty (1-1, 4.11). First pitch at AutoZone Park is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
