Red Wings vs. RailRiders - Game Notes - July 9, 2013

July 9, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

TODAY'S GAME: After their season-high six-game win streak was halted Monday night, the Red Wings look to begin a new streak on Tuesday afternoon (12:05 p.m.) in game two of their three-game set against the Scranton/WB RailRiders at PNC Field in Moosic, PA... Despite the loss the Wings are still an impressive 27-16 since May 27, and even with last night's setback, the Wings inched closer (6.0 GB) to first-place Pawtucket as the Red Sox were swept in a pair of games on Monday... Wild Card leading Norfolk lost as well keeping the Wings just 2.0 GB of the Tides in the wild card hunt... The RailRiders are now the hottest team in the IL as they have won 5 straight and 9 of their last 11 and sit just a game behind Rochester in the standings... Derek Jeter will NOT play today for the RailRiders after going 0-for-2 with a walk and run scored on Monday vs Rochester... After this 3-game set, the Wings will head to Pawtucket for a four-game series (THUR-SUN) against the Paw Sox prior to the All-Star Break (July 15-17).

WITH A WIN TODAY, THE WINGS...:

¨Will avoid losing their 8th series of the season and first at PNC Field in SWB since being swept in a 4-G set 8/22-8/25/11

¨Will still be able to win the season series by winning the last four games between the two clubs this season... Rochester hasn't won a season series vs. SWB since 2007 (11-5) -- their first season as a Yankees' affiliate.

GAINING GROUND IN THE NORTH: The Wings have started their 24-game stretch against IL North opponents by going 6-4 over the first 10 games... In fact, the Wings are 13-6 against the North since May 27 and have moved from last place (on May 27) into 3rd place as of today... After going just 32-48 against their division rivals in 2012, the Wings are currently 24-25 vs. the North this season... From 2009-12, Rochester was just 123-197 (.384) against the North division, while going 121-135 (.473) against the rest of the IL. Their last winning season against the North came in 2008 when they went 43-37.

THE BAHAMA BREEZE: Red Wings leadoff man Antoan Richardson is putting together one of his best offensive seasons to date... On Monday, Richardson smacked his 8th triple of the season between New Britain and Rochester setting a new career-high for him. Over the last 3 seasons, he had collected just 5 total three-baggers in 277 games... His 7 triples with the Wings in just 52 contests tie him for the International League lead with LHV's Cesar Hernandez... Richardson has already swiped 33 bases this season between AA/AAA including a team-high 19 with Rochester... The 33 steals is his highest total since the 2008 season when he stole 33 for Connecticut (AA)... The Bahamas native has been a run producer as well, knocking in a career-high 34 runs in 2013 (20 for the Wings) already. He previous career mark was 31 RBI in 2008.

FOR STARTERS: Red Wings southpaw Andrew Albers (L; 5 ip, 9 h, 5 r/er) became the first Wings starter to allow 5 or more runs in a start since June 19 (Hendriks; 7 ER in 4 IP) last night -- a span of 19 games... Still, Wings starters are 9-8 with a 3.28 ERA (42 ER/115.1 IP) over this stretch... The Wings will hand the ball to another lefty, Pedro Hernandez, on Tuesday afternoon. Hernandez hasn't allowed more than 3 ER in any outing since May 8 (@ BOS w/ MIN)... Over his last two starts, the 24-year-old has allowed just 3 runs on 10 hits in 14 innings pitched (1.93 ERA) -- including his first career complete-game on June 29 @ SYR (8 ip, 5 h, r, 2 bb, 3 k)... He's also coming off back-to-back starts where he has gone 6.0-plus innings for the first time all season and for the first time since August 11-16, 2012... The last time he went 6.0-plus innings in three straight outings was May 19-31, 2012 with Birmingham (AA; White Sox).

STREAK SNAPPED: Red Wings shortstop Doug Bernier saw his career-high 11-game hit streak come to an end on Monday night after going 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts... Bernier's only other 10-game hit streak in his career came in 2004 with Visalia (A)... Over his 11-gamer, Bernier batted .381 (16-for-42) with 2 doubles, a triple, 6 runs and 3 RBI... He's just the 3rd Red Wings player this season to record a hitting streak of at least 10 games (Colabello, 16 & Herrmann, 11)... Still, since the beginning of June, Bernier is batting .344 (44-for-128) with 15 XBH (10 2B, 4 3B, HR), 26 runs and 18 RBI in 37 games.

MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT...:

¨The Red Wings lost for just the 3rd time when scoring first in their last 23 games when grabbing the early lead... They are now 32-17 in games they score the first run... Last season, the Wings went 47-19 when scoring first.

¨Eric Farris went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored... His first 3-hit game since 5/25 and first extra-base hit since June 17

¨Blake Martin allowed a solo home run to Josh Bell in the 7th inning... All four of his runs allowed w/ ROC have come via solo home runs... Over half of his hits allowed in his first 10 Triple-A games (12.2 IP) have been HR (4 of 7).
