Red Wings vs. Indians - Game Notes - June 27, 2103

June 27, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

TODAYfS GAME: After putting an end to their mini, two-game losing skid with a 9-7 win on Wednesday, the Red Wings look to make it two in a row on Thursday night (7:05 p.m.) in game three of their four-game set from Victory Field against the first-place Indianapolis Indians, Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates... The Wings have won 10 of 15 and 16 of their last 24 overall to move just 2.0 GB of the wild-card leading Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Norfolk Tides. However, with Pawtucket winning 5 straight and 9 of their last 10, the Red Wings have fallen 10.5 GB in the IL North... Meanwhile, Indianapolis owns the best-record in the IL (53-28), a 13.5-game lead in the IL South and the best home record in the league at 30-13.

QUITE THE TRIP: The Wings are now 3-3 over the first six games of their 10-game road trip -- including a four-game split with Louisville. Rochester will play two more games against Indy before stopping in Syracuse for a two-game weekend set... This is Rochesterfs longest scheduled road trip since a 10-game, 11-day trip from May 20-30, 2006 and first 10-game trip with no off day since June 3-12, 2004... Later this season, the Wings will embark on an 11-game, 12-day trip from 8/5-8/16.

JUNE BUGS: With the Red Wings win on Wednesday afternoon, the Wings improved to 16-10 in the month of June -- tied for the most wins of any IL club... If the Wings were to win two of the remaining four games this month, they would have their winningest month of June since 1991 (20-11)... Two more wins in June would give them 18 for the month -- a total they have reached in just four months since 2000 (July 2012, 18-11; August 2008, 20-9; July 2007, 18-13; August 2001, 19-11).

SLAMMING THE DOOR: One reason for the Wings success in June is the fact the Wings are for 9-for-9 in save opportunites this month after RHP Shairon Martis earned his 4th save of the year on Wednesday against Indy (he had one career save in 9 pro seasons prior to this season)... The Wings, who led the league with 48 saves a season ago, currently rank 2nd in the IL with 24 saves despite the fact no Red Wings pitcher has more than five on the year. RHP Michael Tonkin, who has a team-leading 5 saves (all in June), ranks T-14th in the IL in that category... The Wings have used a closer-by-committee approach as already a tied for franchise record 11 different Red Wings have recorded a save for the Wings in 2013... The 2012, 2009 and 1995 clubs also had 11 hurlers record a save.

¨The Red Wings are the only team in the IL this season that has yet to lose when leading after 8 innings (32-0)

CLUBBINf COLABELLO: 1B/OF Chris Colabello extended his on-base streak to 34 games -- the longest current streak in the IL -- going 2-for-4 with a homer and two more RBI on Wednesday afternoon. The 34 games is the second longest streak in the IL this season behind only the 48-game streak of Toledofs Jordan Lennerton... Over this span, which dates back to May 9, Colabello has hit .422 (54-128) with 10 HR, 39 RBI and a .500 OBP... At the moment, Colabello leads the IL in AVG (.369), SLG (.663), OBP (.437), OPS (1.100) and RBI (61) while ranking in the top 3 in all of baseball in AVG, SLG and OPS.

¨Colabellofs on pace to hit 32 HR and drive in 108 runs this season... it would be the most HR and RBI by a Red Wings player since Jim Fuller hit 39 homers and had 108 RBI in 1973.

WORLEY TABBED IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Red Wings RHP Vance Worley takes the mound in game three of the series tonight as the reigning International League Pitcher of the Week after tossing back-to-back complete game victories against Scranton/WB and Louisville (2-0, 0.56 ERA, ER, 16.0 IP) last week... Hefs the first Wings pitcher to toss back-to-back CG since Philip Humber in 2008... The Twins Opening Day starter has now posted a league-leading 3 CG in 6 starts with Rochester after being optioned from Minnesota on May 22. His other CG came in nine-inning, shutout fashion over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in his first career start with Rochester on May 27. A Red Wings pitcher hadnft turned in three CG in one season since 2007 when Kevin Slowey (5), Nick Blackburn (3) and Brian Duensing (3) all accomplished the feat... The Red Wings lead all of baseball (MiLB & MLB) with seven CG this season.
