NEWARK, NY (6.16.17) - After a back and forth affair at Colburn Park, the Geneva Red Wings extended a 5-4 lead to an 11-4 lead with a 6 run to of the seventh. Geneva added two runs in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring 13-4. The Pilots drop to 2-9 and the Red Wings sit at 8-4. Justin Barr (Central Alabama) picked up the win in relief, going 1.1 innings giving up just 1 hit and walking 2. Ryan Allen (Eckerd) picks up the loss in his team debut allowing 4 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) in 1.1 innings.
The Pilots got on the board in the bottom of the second when Third Baseman Tanner Huddleston (Jones County JC) deposited a 1-1 fastball from Red Wings starter Slater O'Brien (St. Joseph's) over the center field wall for his first home run of the summer.
Geneva got 2 back in the top of the fourth when Trustin Riley (Tampa) drove in a run with a single, he then came around to score on a Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic) throwing error to take a 2-1 lead. Newark tied it up in the bottom half when Huddleston drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
The Red Wings got 2 more runs in the top half of the fifth off of Pilots starter Adam Donovan (DeSales) on a run scoring single from Matt Chamberlain (New Haven). He came around to score on a passed ball from Pan. The Pilots tied the game up at 4 in the bottom half on back to back doubles from Peter Battaglia (Niagara) and John Balliet (Orange Coast CC) to knock Geneva starter O'Brien out of the game.
Geneva went up 5-4 in the top of the sixth after a lead off triple by Dominic Toso (Bucknell 17-18) knocked Donovan out of the game, Justin Etts (NJIT) then drove Toso in on a single off of Allen. Newark had a chance to tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but Battaglia flew out to left on the first pitch from Barr to end the innings.
The Red Wings opened the game up when they sent 11 hitters to the plate, scored 6 runs off of 3 Pilots relievers in the top of the seventh to go up 11-4. The scoring started on a double by Will Simoneit (Cornell), Toso followed that up with a run scoring double of his own, Etts drove him in with a single to force Allen out of the game. Jordan Miller (Coastal Alabama CC) then came in and surrendered run scoring singles to Chamberlain and Yohei Ishiyama (Nihon University). A Miller wild pitch allowed a run to score in between the singles.
The Red Wings rounded out the scoring in the top of the ninth on a Mikey Arman (Kenyon) two run single.
Arman went 2-6 with a triple, 2 runs and 2 runs batted in. Toso went 2-5 with a double, triple, 2 runs and 1 driven in, Etts and Chamberlain both went 2-5 with 2 runs driven in. Geneva's bullpen allowed just 3 hits in 4.2 innings, walking 3 and striking out 4.
The Pilots bullpen went 4 innings allowing 7 hits, 8 runs (5 earned), 4 walks, and 5 strikouts. Huddleston had the big day at the plate for the Pilots going 2-3 with a home run, sacrifice fly, 2 runs batted in, and scored 1. Tyler Odekirk (Irvine Valley CC) went 1-3 with 3 stolen bases.
Nine different police departments, as well as the council on alcoholism and addiction were recognized prior to tonight's game.
