Red Sox Outlast Dash in Extra Innings on Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem smacked 12 hits in its series finale against Salem, but the Red Sox pulled out a 6-4 victory in 10 innings against the Dash on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.

In the loss, Joel Booker tied a career-high with four hits in the contest, good for his sixth multi-hit game of the year. Overall, Booker has a .377 batting average, which is the top mark on the ballclub. Meanwhile, Mitch Roman registered his second three-hit performance at the High-A level, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored on Sunday.

Despite the Dash's (10-8) strong hit total, the game moved into extra innings with the score tied at three. With runners at the corners and one out in the 10th against right-hander Matt Foster, Brett Netzer stroked a sacrifice fly to right-center to put the Red Sox (10-8) ahead 4-3. Bobby Dalbec followed with a two-run homer to right-center to cap Salem's scoring efforts.

Winston-Salem plated a run in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI single from Booker against Hunter Smith, who would pick up with the win by going 1.2 innings, but Matthew Gorst locked down the save by retiring Blake Rutherford and Micker Adolfo to end the ballgame. With the loss, Winston falls to 5-3 at home this season.

In spite of the final score, the Dash jumped ahead quickly in the first against Red Sox starter Jake Thompson. Booker led off the frame with a single, and, with Alex Call batting, he stole second. Call followed with a single to center, and Rutherford brought home Booker with an RBI groundout to make it a 1-0 contest. Two batters later, Gavin Sheets smacked an RBI single to left to put the Dash up 2-0.

Winston-Salem left-hander Bernardo Flores was perfect through the first three innings, but the Red Sox offense got rolling in the fourth. After Santiago Espinal and Netzer hit back-to-back singles, Dalbec drilled a two-run double to center to knot the contest at two. Flores finished his outing by going five innings, allowing three hits and two runs while walking one and striking out three.

Rutherford helped the Dash regain the lead in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, but Salem responded in sixth against Dash reliever Zach Thompson. With one out and nobody out, Jerry Downs smoked a solo shot to the Nature's Select Knoll in left field.

Following a league-wide off day on Monday, the Dash embark on a six-game road trip to Lynchburg and Wilmington. Winston-Salem kicks off a three-game series against the Hillcats on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Dash will send right-hander Dylan Cease (2-1, 3.45 ERA), the White Sox fifth-best prospect per MLB Pipeline, to the hill in the series opener. Winston-Salem will return home to BB&T Ballpark from May 1-6 for a six-game homestand, which will feature a pair of three-game sets against the Hillcats and the Buies Creek Astros. The promotions for the Dash's upcoming homestand include the team's first Free Food Tuesday of the year on May 1, where fans can enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers through the seventh inning for the price of admission, a Pure Barre class on the field on May 3, and a Star Wars Night on May 4.

Meanwhile, the Dash will wear "Winston-Salem Rayados" jerseys on May 6, as part of the team's participation in Minor League Baseball's "Copa de la Diversión," or "Fun Cup," initiative, a season-long event series specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams' local Hispanic/Latino communities.

"Rayados" translates to "the Striped Ones," and it is born out of a collaboration with the baseball team and the Hispanic League of Winston-Salem. The name recalls the pinstripes worn from previous Winston-Salem teams, and the term "Rayo" also loosely translates to "Bolt," the Dash's mascot. Winston-Salem will sport a white jersey with red and blue stripes and "Winston-Salem Rayados" written on the front. In addition, the club will wear red caps with a white "R" outlined in blue.
