Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins pulled together a valiant comeback effort led by Carter Rowney on Saturday night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, but were unable to fully overcome a three-goal opening period by their opponent in a 3-2 loss at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Rowney scored both of the Penguins' (30-14-1-1) goals in the contest, boosting his point total in the first two games out of the All-Star break to five (3G-2A).

"Over the last stretch, [Rowney] has been playing extremely well," said Penguins head coach Clark Donatelli. "We're glad to see the puck go into the back of the net for him tonight. It's well-deserved. He's been playing hard and playing very well for us."

Jared Gomes opened the scoring 7:28 into the game, giving Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.

The Sound Tigers converted on their third power play of the opening frame, when a one-timer by Alan Quine put the Sound Tigers up by two with 4:15 left in the first.

Two minutes after a Quine's tally, a three-goal opening period for Bridgeport was capped off by Justin Vaive.

With only 1:15 remaining in the second period, Rowney gave the Penguins a shot of adrenaline with their first goal of the game, cutting the Sound Tigers' lead to 3-1.

Rowney scored once again, brining the Penguins within one, for his 10th goal of the season at 6:48 of the third period.

Penguins defenseman Will O'Neill earned assists on both of Rowney's goals, giving the All-Star 14 points in his last 13 games (2G-12A).

With a six-on-four power play for the final minute of the game, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Jean-Sébastien Dea struck iron on a backhand shot as the post denied him the game's tying goal. Shortly thereafter, time expired on the Penguins' comeback attempt, and Bridgeport clung onto their 3-2 lead for the win.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished the game unsuccessful on three power play attempts while killing off five-of-six man advantage chances afforded to the Sound Tigers.

Tristan Jarry made 24 saves on 27 shots and was handed his third regulation loss of the season. By surviving the Penguins' ferocious stampede at the end of the game, the Sound Tigers' Christopher Gibson reached 30 saves for the victory.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's next game is a weekday match-up with the Utica Comets on Tuesday, Feb. 9. It will be the second and final meeting of the season between the Penguins and Comets, and only one played in Utica. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
