June 25, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Pelicans set season-highs with 15 runs on 24 hits, Carlos Sencion tied a franchise record with eight walks allowed, and Eric Campbell scored a run for the franchise record ninth straight game as Myrtle Beach pounded Lynchburg 15-6 before 2,002 fans at City Stadium Monday night. The Birds improved to 3-2 in the second half and 33-41 overall while moving into first place in the Southern Division by a half-game. Darlington native Quentin Davis collected four of the 24 hits, which is a new team-high in the Carolina League this season. Davis also drove in four runs to lead the way for the Pelicans offensive explosion.

Sencion somehow allowed only a two-run homer to Brad Corley through the first three innings, but departed with one out in the fourth after walks seven and eight. Jake Stevens entered from the bullpen and allowed the inherited runners to score, although both were unearned thanks to an error by Campbell and a wild pitch by Stevens. Myrtle Beach got on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from J.D. Roberts and an RBI grounder by Elvis Andrus to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Lynchburg answered in the bottom of the frame with Corley's second two-run homer. In the top of the sixth however, the Birds would strike for six runs en route to scoring the final 13 runs of the game.

Isaiah Ka'aihue, Matt Young and Paul Bennett all singled to load the bases to start the inning, and Quentin Davis laced a two-run single to left-center to pull the Birds to within 6-4. Jose Camarena then hammered the very next pitch from starter Todd Redmond off the wall in right to tie the game, and two batters later Jordan Schafer drove a two-run homer of his own out to right-center to put the Pelicans on top 8-6. Myrtle Beach tacked on a run in the seventh when Schafer drew a bases-loaded walk with two away but the Cats would threaten in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases themselves with only one out. Tripper Johnson, at the plate as the potential go-ahead run, struck a sharp liner toward right field that seemed destined to plate a pair of runs, but Bennett ranged to his left, snared the catch, and then fired to second to double off Jamie Romak to end the inning in dramatic fashion.

Davis added another run-scoring single in the top of the eighth to make it 10-6, but Myrtle Beach had to survive another bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the inning. Adam Stanley came out of the bullpen to begin the frame, but after Omar Falcon grounded out Greg Picart singled before Stanley walked the next two hitters. Stanley stayed in for a lefty-lefty match-up with James Boone that began with Boone serving as the potential tying run and ended with him popping out to short for the second out. Sung Ki Jung then came on to face Jason Delaney, the league leader in batting average, but all he could muster was a slow tapper up the third base line that Jung fielded cleanly for the final out. Myrtle Beach then added five runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin, highlighted by RBI doubles from Schafer and Andrus.

Stevens (5-5) got the win in relief while Jung earned his eighth save since he entered with the tying run at the plate even though the final margin was nine runs. Davis picked up his first four-hit game of the year to lead the offense, while also driving in four runs. Schafer, Ka'aihue, Young and Bennett all had three hits, while Andrus, Campbell, Camarena and Roberts all had two hits. The 24 hits were the most ever allowed by the Lynchburg franchise, a history that spans 42 years in the Carolina League.

The rubber match in this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday as Sergio Valenzuela (0-0, 4.50 ERA) opposes Lynchburg's Clayton Hamilton (2-5, 6.04 ERA). Chris Vines (0-1, 12.96 ERA) will follow Valenzuela in a piggy-back role. The broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
