RECAP:Third Period Outburst Sends Rays Past Norfolk

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - A five-goal outburst in the third period propelled the South Carolina Stingrays (7-7-1-0) to a 5-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals (2-11-4-0) Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.

South Carolina forwards Joe Devin, Patrick Gaul and Kelly Zajac each recorded two points in the win, while Alex Gacek scored in his fifth straight game and Scott Tanski scored for the third consecutive contest. Stingrays' goaltender Parker Milner earned the victory in between the pipes, making 26 saves.

The teams remained scoreless during the first two periods of play and entered the third still in a 0-0 stalemate before combining for six tallies in the final frame.

Norfolk jumped out in front and took a 1-0 lead at 1:38 of the third on a goal by Brodie Dupont. The puck was the only one to beat Milner on the night, who was otherwise outstanding in net for the Stingrays during the game.

South Carolina then got on the board with a quick response from forward Steve McParland, who tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the season at 5:59. Assists on the tally went to both Gaul and Devin.

2:32 later, Devin lit the lamp with his fourth strike of the season to give the Stingrays the lead. With the eventual game-winner, Devin scored in his first game back with the team after playing three games on loan with the American Hockey League's (AHL) San Antonio Rampage.

Gaul was given the lone assist on the goal after winning the face-off right to Devin, who beat Norfolk goaltender Eetu Laurikainen with a wrist shot to the upper right-hand corner of the net. Gaul is now second on the team with nine assists on the season.

The lead was expanded to 3-1 at 9:34 of the third when Tanski used his speed to create a wrap-around chance that gave him his fourth goal of the year. The lone assist on the team's third goal of the night was credited to defenseman Nick Neville, the rookie's first professional point in his fifth game of the year for the Stingrays.

Defenseman Steve Weinstein capped the run of four South Carolina goals in a span of 5:03 with his second tally of the year to make it 4-1. The Los Angeles native was led into the zone on an odd-man rush by Zajac, before shooting the puck low and underneath Laurikainen for the goal. A second assist was given to forward Rob Flick on the play.

Gacek later converted with an empty net at 18:47 of the third for his fifth of the year and the fifth goal of the period for the Stingrays, with an assist from Zajac.

Although South Carolina was not awarded a power play in the game, the Stingrays held the Admirals 0-for-2 on their man-advantage chances. Laurikainen finished the game with 28 saves.

South Carolina will now head to Atlanta to face the Gladiators for the first time during the 2016-17 season Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The Stingrays return to the North Charleston Coliseum ice Dec. 9 when they take on the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m.
