Shuckers homer past Shrimp 10-5

Loss ends Jacksonville's winning streak

BILOXI, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (35-27, 65-67) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (30-30, 66-63) by a 9-5 score in the second game of the five-game series at MGM Park on Sunday night.

The loss ends Jacksonville's winning streak of seven games, which had been tied for the longest winning streak for the Jumbo Shrimp this season. Biloxi left-handed reliever Nick Ramirez (7-4) earned the win, while Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Esmerling De La Rosa (2-2) took the loss.

John Norwood gave the Jumbo Shrimp the early advantage with a two-run homer, his 18th of the season, in the top of the first to put the Shrimp in front 2-0. The Shuckers would answer with a two-run homer of their own by Jacob Nottingham in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 2-2. In the top of the fifth, after Braxton Lee reached on a two-out error by the Shuckers shortstop, Austin Dean brought him home with an RBI triple to put Jacksonville back in front 3-2. The Shuckers responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out two-RBI single by Gabriel Noriega to give the Shuckers their first lead of the game at 4-3.

The Jumbo Shrimp broke through in the top of the seventh, with Braxton Lee tying the game at 4-4 on an RBI single. Austin Dean followed by grounding into a force out that scored Dustin Geiger from third base to give Jacksonville a 5-4 lead.

However, it was Biloxi with a five-run bottom of the seventh inning that would be the difference. With two outs, Angel Ortega blasted a three-run homer that put the Shuckers in front 7-5. The Shuckers added solo homers by the next two batters Javier Betancourt and Nottingham's second blast of the game grew the lead to 9-5. Biloxi added its final run in the bottom of the eighth, as Jake Gatewood delivered an RBI single to put the lead at 10-5, which would be the final.

The Jumbo Shrimp and Shuckers will continue their series with the third game of the five-game set on Monday night at 7:35 p.m. ET. Right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards (5-5, 3.08 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Biloxi right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta (1-4, 2.26 ERA).
