HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Following a one-hour-44-minute rain delay in the middle of the sixth inning, the Hagerstown Suns (29-24, 67-55) brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings but fell to the Kannapolis Intimidators (23-32, 62-61) during a 6-3 decision on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium.

Following the loss, Hagerstown remained two games behind the first-place Hickory Crawdads in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half title race with 15 games remaining, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers leap-frogged the Suns into second place, one game behind Hickory.

The Suns scored first in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally sparked by a hard-hit single into right field by Nick Banks. The next batter, Anderson Franco, ripped the first of his two doubles in the game to give Hagerstown a 1-0 lead against Intimidators starter Blake Hickman (Win, 4-6).

Kannapolis scored the next six runs beginning with a leadoff solo homer by Craig Dedelow in the third followed by two more RBI base knocks against Suns starter Ben Braymer (Loss, 1-2) in the fourth. The 23-year-old lefty matched his career high of eight strikeouts and exited his third start in Hagerstown with three earned runs on six hits and one walk.

Kyle Simonds fell victim to Mother Nature as a severe storm began moments after he took the mound to open the sixth. With wind and rain blowing across the diamond, a slippery grounder deceived shortstop Carter Kieboom and the error allowed the inning to continue. Evan Skoug tallied his second triple in the last two games on a windy fly ball that bounced off the wall and Alex Call followed with a two-run homer to the opposite field with plenty of help from gusting winds.

After the Intimidators scored three unearned runs in the sixth, umpires called both teams off the diamond at 7:51 p.m. Once play resumed at 9:35, Hagerstown had plenty of fight and scored twice in the eighth. Blake Perkins sent a double to the wall with two outs, Kieboom followed with a walk, and back-to-back RBI singles by Aldrem Corredor and Tres Barrera forced Kannapolis reliever Tyler Johnson off the mound. With two runners aboard, the Intimidators called upon Kevin Escorcia (Hold, 12) to strike out Telmito Agustin, who represented the tying run.

Hagerstown threatened again in the ninth with a leadoff single by Banks, a walk by Franco, and a lineout to short that Grant Massey threw away into right field on a double-play attempt, moving both runners into scoring position. Again the Intimidators summoned a new reliever and Danny Dopico (Save, 4) struck out Angelo La Bruna before inducing the game-ending groundout by Perkins.

Suns reliever Jake Barnett pitched the final three innings for Hagerstown and allowed one hit while racking up five strikeouts. Hagerstown arms combined for 14 strikeouts, just two shy of the season high set on August 5 at Lakewood.

Banks led the Suns offensively during a 3-for-5 night at the plate with a run scored and Franco went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Hagerstown drove in all three of its runs with two outs.

On Sunday, the Suns host the third of four games in this weekend wrap-around series with the Intimidators. Hagerstown right-handed starter Brigham Hill (0-1, 6.43) goes to the mound at 2:05 p.m. against Kannapolis righty Dylan Cease (0-6, 4.74). It's Sunday Family Sunday at Municipal Stadium with the first 250 fans receiving a poster of former Hagerstown Suns pitcher Erick Fedde, who made his Major League with the Washington Nationals on July 30.
