FIVE-RUN NINTH POWERS 'BIRDS PAST SUNS

Bundy pitches 2.2 scoreless early; Delmarva wins 6-1 late

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds exploded for five runs in the ninth inning to beat the Hagerstown Suns 6-1 on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.

With the game tied 1-1, Jake Ring worked a one-out walk. Gerrion Grim then hit a little squibber to the left side of the mound. Hagerstown pitcher Phil Morse picked it up and threw it wild to first base, giving Grim an infield single and advancing the runners into scoring position on the error. Alejandro Juvier hit a deep flyball to left field. Telmito Agustin tripped over as he climbed up the hill in left and the ball fell in for a bloop double. Ring scored and Grim slid in ahead of the tag with a second run to give the Shorebirds (28-35, 57-74) a 3-1 lead.

The trouble for the Suns (31-31, 69-62) didn't end there. Juvier advanced to third on a passed ball and Milton Ramos drew a walk to put men on the corners. Stuart Levy hit a line drive into center for a single to score Juvier and chase Morse from the game. Cole Billingsley grounded out to first to move both runners up, and Ryan McKenna drove the final nail in the coffin with a two-run single to center, making it 6-1.

Jake Bray came in and sat down the home side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to ice it.

Steven Klimek (7-3) picked up the win in relief for Delmarva, allowing one run on two hits in two innings. Morse (0-4) endured the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in just a third of an inning.

Runs came hard to come by early as the game went scoreless into the seventh inning. Delmarva was held without a hit through the first six innings, but Grim put the 'Birds in both columns with a solo crack to right center field. The home run was Grim's 17th of the season, tying him for second in the SAL, and gave the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.

The Suns answered in the bottom of the seventh. Telmito Agustin laced a one-out double to the wall in right, and Branden Boggetto singled to left to move Agustin to third. Angelo La Bruna came up next and dropped a squeeze bunt back to the mound. Klimek took the sure out at first base and Agustin sprinted home to tie it at 1-1.

Grim finished 2-for-3 with the solo homer and two runs scored. Juvier and McKenna each drove in two runs.

Nick Banks led the way for the Suns, going 2-for-4 with a double.

Orioles' No. 7 prospect Hunter Harvey made his second start of the year for the Shorebirds and lasted 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out five. Cody Dube came in to get the last out of the third and pitched 3.1 scoreless three-hit innings, striking out four of his own.

Hagerstown's Carlos Pena continued his mastery of the Shorebirds, tossing five hitless innings while walking three and striking out nine in a no-decision.

The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Shorebirds against the Suns. The five-run cushion is Delmarva's biggest win since an 8-0 shutout victory at Rome on July 23.

The Shorebirds turn to SAL innings leader Lucas Humpal (7-11, 4.16) for his final start of the season against the Suns' Ben Braymer (2-2, 6.66) on Wednesday night. First pitch is 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports AM 960 and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
