HOUSTON (Saturday) - Playing their first nationally-televised game of the season, t he Houston Dynamo remained unbeaten at BBVA Compass Stadium this season with a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in front of 16,918 fans on Saturday afternoon. Goals from forwards Erick Torres and Alberth Elis and a clean sheet from goalkeeper Joe Willis led the way for the Dynamo.
The Dynamo offense did not waste any time getting started, pressing the Quakes defense from the onset. In the eighth minute, midfielder Alex was making a run inside the box and was fouled by San Jose defender Fatai Alashe.
Torres stepped to the spot and gave the Dynamo the lead, sending his penalty kick down the middle of San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham's goal. Torres' goal was his league-leading seventh of the season and his third scored by penalty kick.
Houston put the game away in the 72nd minute when Elis ran onto the end of a corner kick from midfielder Eric Alexander and redirected the cross into the back of the net. It was Elis' second goal in as many games and his third on the year.
San Jose had opportunities to equalize the game prior to Elis' goal, but Willis and the back line were up to the task each time. In the 30th minute, San Jose forward Marco Ureña dribbled the ball inside the 18-yard box and fired a right-footed shot that was saved Willis. The Quakes threatened again in the 66th minute when substitute Danny Hoesen got loose on the right side of goal, but Willis stood tall and deflected Hoesen's shot out for a corner kick.
Torres and Elis each had opportunities to add to their ledgers on the day. Torres attempted an audacious bicycle kick in the 16th minute, but the flying effort whistled over the crossbar. Elis nearly found the net in the 57th minute, when he and Alex played a give-and-go. Alex got the ball dribbled it inside the box and sent a cross to Elis. The Honduran native connected with a header but the ball bounced just past the right post.
Houston had several dangerous chances late on, including a sequence that ended with midfielder Juan David Cabezas cracking a shot off the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 86th minute.
The Dynamo will continue the 2017 season, presented by 76, on Friday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. CDT against Toronto FC at BMO Field.
