Rebels Win 8-2 over Kootenay Ice

The Rebels kicked off the final weekend of their five game home stand by welcoming the Kootenay to town for their second-to-last visit of the season.

FIRST PERIOD

The Rebels opened the scoring in this one on their opening shot just 34 seconds into the game. A Kootenay turnover led to Evan Polei setting up Jake DeBrusk, who beat Rylan Toth for his 15th goal of the year. Haydn Fleury also assisted on the early 1-0 goal.

Red Deer jumped ahead 2-0 at the 9:18 mark. Jeff de Wit did the heavy lifting, bringing the puck out from the corner to the Ice net. Hoflin turned him aside but Grayson Pawlenchuk was right there to put the rebound home for his 18th of the year. Austin Schmoorkoff also picked up an assist on the goal.

Adam Musil made it 3-0 just 54 seconds later as he beat Hoflin with a wraparond for his 14th goal of the year, Polei earned the lone assist.

Kootenay got on the board with a shorthanded goal at 14:17. Matt Alfaro set up Zak Zborosky for his 19th of the year to make it a 3-1 game.

SECOND PERIOD

Holfin held the Ice in this one, making several superb saves before the Rebels broke the game open late in the middle frame.

Just one second after a Rebels powerplay came to an end, Adam Helewka blasted home a one-timer for his 26th goal of the campaign. Michael Spacek and Haydn Fleury assisted on the 4-1 goal.

A mere seven seconds later, Austin Pratt pounced on a Kootenay turnover to fire home his 6th goal of the year. The Minnesota native made it 5-1 Rebels at the 15:51 mark.

In the final minute of the period, Austin Strand went to the net, found the loose put and put it home for his second goal of the year. Braden Purtill and Pratt picked up the helpers on the goal which sent the Rebels to the second intermission with a commanding 6-1 lead.

THIRD PERIOD

Kootenay kept battling and would break through with a poweerplay goal 2:34 into the third period from Alfaro, his 14th goal of the year.

Helewka put the Rebels ahead 7-2 with a powerplay blast, his second goal on the night, from Colton Bobyk and Ivan Nikolishin at the 12:55 mark.

Colton Bobyk fired one home from the half-wall to make it an 8-2 game, Kayle Doetzel and de Wit with the assists, at 17:05. That would be it for scoring as the Rebels cruised to a big home ice win.
