Rebels Get on the Board in Red Deer

Adam Helewka scored a pair of goals to guide the Red Deer Rebels to their first victory at the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup with a 5-2 victory over the QMJHL Champion Rouyn-Niranda Huskies on Sunday night at the ENMAX Centrium in Red Deer, AB.
The Rouyn-Niranda Huskies struck first as Timo Meier scored his third goal of the tournament on the power play to open up a 1-0 lead. Julien Nantel then added another as Rouyn-Niranda made the score 2-0. Rebels' Head Coach Brent Sutter called a timeout after the goal to regroup his squad and did they respond.
Evan Molei put the Rebels on the board with Connor Bleackley and Brandon Hagel collecting the assists. Red Deer trailed 2-1 after one period of play.
The Rebels exploded for three goals in the second period as Adam Helewka netted his second of the tournament ignited the crowd at ENMAX Centrium. Acquired from the Swift Current Broncos mid season, Jake DeBrusk tipped home a shot from Ivan Nikolishin to captapult his Club to a 3-2 lead. Moments later, Helewka potted his second of the contest to provide much-needed insurance for the MasterCard Memorial Cup hosts.
In the third period, Haydn Fleury wired a slap shot by Huskies netminder Chase Marchand to increase the lead to three goals. Rylan Toth was solid in the Rebels cage as he backstopped 22 shots with the Rebels skating to an eventual 5-2 win.
Red Deer took advantage of their power play chances, finishing 3/9 while Rouyn-Niranda went 1/5.
Monday night sees the WHL Champion Brandon Wheat Kings clash with the OHL Champion London Knights in Game 4 of the MasterCard Memorial Cup. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm Central.
