REAL SALT LAKE SIGNS DEFENDER SHAWN BARRY American-Born University of Virginia Product has Eight Seasons of Experience in Austria, Germany and Poland, Adds Depth and Competition to Defense

SANDY, Utah (Wednesday) - Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel announced today that the club has signed DF Shawn Barry ahead of the 2018 season. He will join the club in preseason, pending receipt of his ITC.

Barry, 27, has played in Austria, Germany and Poland since first signing as a professional in 2010. Born in Miramar, Florida, he played two college seasons at the University of Virginia before making the move abroad to play for LASK Linz in 2010. He played 86 matches over five seasons, scoring eight goals in the process. In 2015, he made the move to Germany's second division with FSV Frankfurt. There, he scored two goals in 56 appearances, then made the move to Korona Kielce in Poland in the summer of 2017.

"He's got some great professional experience and can play multiple positions along the back line. He's a guy that can challenge guys on the roster on a weekly basis for playing time," Waibel said. "He's a strong, athletic guy who can pass well out of the back. His mid-range passing is phenomenal. He trends more to the way the staff wants to play."

Barry is expected to join the team for training camp ahead of training camp, which opens on January 22 at the club's brand new Zions Bank Real Academy facility in Herriman, Utah.
