REAL SALT LAKE DEFENDER JUSTIN SCHMIDT UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL FOOT SURGERY Rookie Defender is Expected to Miss Two Months After Surgery to Repair a Fractured Fifth Metatarsal in his Left Foot; FW Chad Barrett Also Has Second Knee Surgery After Setback

SANDY, Utah (Wednesday) - Real Salt Lake has announced that DF Justin Schmidt has undergone successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a fracture in his fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

"He should do great in his recovery," said Dr. Andrew Cooper, who performed the surgery at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. "He had the option not to have surgery, but after fixing it, it should heal faster and he should be ready for next season."

Schmidt, 23, is expected to be out for eight weeks, effectively ending his rookie season. A second-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft after a standout career at the University of Washington, Schmidt is in his first season with Real Salt Lake. He has nine appearances on the season, seven in a starting role, including his MLS debut on March 11 against the Chicago Fire. In addition, he made five appearances on loan with the USL Regular Season champion Real Monarchs.

In addition, FW Chad Barrett had a second surgery to repair a femoral chondral defect in his left knee. Previously, he had this procedure done in April, but he had a second defect discovered during his recovery.

"This is a new injury," Cooper said. "It's tough to deal with because he was doing everything right and was still in recovery, but this one is not as big as the first."

A 13-year MLS veteran, Barrett signed with Real Salt Lake in the offseason and played in three matches before undergoing the first surgery.

Real Salt Lake will play on the road Sunday against the Colorado Rapids (5:30 p.m. MT) before returning home to host Sporting Kansas City in the regular season finale on October 22 at Rio Tinto Stadium (2 p.m. MT).
