The Royals split the two games played this past week, defeating the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia on Thursday (4-3); and returning to Reading the next night (Friday), where the team suffered its first defeat of the season, 5-1, to the Manchester Monarchs.

This week the Royals kick off an eight game western road trip with three in a row against the Idaho Steelheads at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. This will be the second time that Reading has played in Boise. (The team split a pair of games against the Steelheads in Boise just after Larry Courville took over as the team's head coach in January 2009).

The pending eight game road trip includes a game against the Colorado Eagles in Loveland, Colorado (November 2), and a pair against the Rapid City Rush in Rapid City, South Dakota (November 4 and 5)-two teams the Royals have never faced. The trip concludes with a game in Cincinnati against the Cyclones (November 9) and Wheeling against the Nailers (November 11).

Reading's 4-3 win over the Wheeling Nailers last Thursday was a virtual mirror image of the last game the Royals had played in WesBanco Arena-Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals against the Nailers (May 11, 2016), when the Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to have the team's season end in a 4-3 loss in overtime. On Thursday, in the return of the Royals to WesBanco, it was the Nailers who jumped out to an early 2-o lead only to have Reading bounce back with four straight goals and win 4-3. That proved to be the first come-from-behind win of the year for the Royals.

Reading's first goal on Thursday in Wheeling was scored by Olivier Labelle. That was Labelle's team-leading third goal of the year-all of which have been scored on the power play, which is tied for the league lead in that category.

Labelle's three goals have come on just eight shots, which translates into a team-leading 37.5% shooting percentage.

The Royals second goal in Wheeling last Thursday, which tied the game at two, was scored by Chris McCarthy. That was his second goal in his second game with the Royals. McCarthy is tied with Labelle (3g-1a) and Ryan Penny (1g-3a) for the team lead in scoring with four points (2g-2a).

Mike Pelech scored a power play goal mid-way into the third period to give Reading a 3-2 lead in Wheeling.

That was Pelech's first goal of the season and was the team's fourth power play goal on just the seventh power play chance of the year. Pelech had two power play goals in thirteen games with Reading last season.

Forty seconds after Pelech's goal, rookie Matt Wilkins, playing in his first game with the Royals, scored his first goal as a pro which also proved to be the game winner that night.

Goaltender Martin Ouellette, who suffered the 4-3 overtime loss in Game Seven of last season's ECSF in Wheeling (despite making 51 saves in that game), made 26 saves in Thursday's 4-3 win in Wheeling to record his first win of the year. It was also his thirty-fifth win in three seasons as a Royal-placing him third all-time in that category for Reading goaltenders.

Steven Swavely scored the Royals' lone goal in Friday's 5-1 loss to Manchester. Swavely, who hails from Reading, has scored a goal in each of the two games that he has played at Santander Arena in Reading.

Despite not yet scoring a goal this season, Kevin Sundher leads the Royals with thirteen shots, including a team- leading five on Friday against the Monarchs.

Although he sustained his first loss of the season Friday, goaltender Mark Dekanich made a season-high 34 saves on the 39 shots he faced from Manchester that night.

Reading got touched up for a pair of power play goals against in Wheeling on Thursday and suffered the same fate the next night in Reading when Manchester bagged two power play goals (on four chances). Reading's penalty kill has allowed six power play goals in 17 chances for the opposition for a league worst 64.7% kill ratio.

The Royals power play was blanked for the first time this season (0-5) in Friday's 5-1 loss to Manchester.

Nonetheless, Reading still leads the league with a 33.3% scoring ratio on the power play (4-12)..
