Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (56-28) continued their home-field advantage against the Fightin Phils (50-32) as they won 8-2 on Wednesday night. Reading has yet to win a game at ARM & HAMMER Park this season.
The Thunder wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Viza (6-5) hit Tito Polo with a pitch with one out, who then scored on a RBI single from Billy Fleming to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Viza proceeded to retire nine out of the next eleven batters he would face.
Reading tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning against Thunder starter Justus Sheffield. Malquin Canelo hit a one-out double then scored on a fielding error by Thunder first baseman Dante Bichette Jr. Jiandido Tromp broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning by hitting a home run off Sheffield to give Reading a 2-1 lead. The home run was Tromp's 11th of the season.
Sheffield left the game after 4 1/3 innings due to injury. Nester Cortes entered the game with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Trenton scored six runs off Viza in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead. He gave up seven hits in the inning.
Joey DeNato took over for Viza in the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed just one run in three innings while issuing two walks and giving up three hits. Tito Polo hit a RBI single off DeNato in the bottom of the eighth inning for Trenton's eighth run of the game.
Nester Cortes (5-0) earned his fifth win as he pitched 2 2/3 scoreless inning of relief.
