Rays Add Two More to Roster

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League announced today the signing of forwards Matt Scherer and Keith Johnson for the 2008-09 season. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Scherer, 26, had 13 goals and nine assists in 55 games last season, his first with the Stingrays and first professionally. The Seattle, WA native also had a goal and an assist in 14 playoff games. Prior to his time with the Stingrays, Scherer, at 6-feet and 195-pounds, played four years at the University of Connecticut where he had 105 points (62g, 43a) in 138 games.

"Matt is a smart, physical player on the ice," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "He's a guy who will give it his all every time he steps out on the ice, and someone you like to have out there for you."

Johnson, 23, joins the Stingrays after playing his rookie season with the Utah Grizzlies. The Windsor, CT native was third on the team in points with 53 (27g, 26a) and was second in power play goals with eight in 67 games. In the playoffs, Johnson paced the Grizzlies with a club best six goals and ten assists for 16 points in 15 games as they advanced to the National Conference Finals before falling to the Las Vegas Wranglers.

"Johnson was instrumental in Utah's success, especially during their deep playoff run," said Bednar. "He had a great rookie season and we expect big things offensively from him this year."

Prior to turning professional, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward played four years of NCAA hockey with the University of Maine Black Bears. In his four years, Johnson had 54 points (30g, 24a) in 139 games.
