Potomac Nationals News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC- The Potomac Nationals (34-24, 14-13) shut out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (30-28, 18-10) by the score of 5-0 on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on the strength of a terrific start by LHP Robbie Ray (4-2), who held Myrtle Beach scoreless through 6.2 innings.

Potomac, the Carolina League's best club, has now won eight consecutive ballgames and earned its fourth shutout victory of the 2013 season.

Ray, the winning pitcher, gave up four scattered singles while walking one and fanning seven. Ray struck out the side in the 4th frame.

The only Pelicans hitters to collect a one-base knock were C Patrick Cantwell, RF Trever Adams, 3B Edwin Garcia, and DH Joe Maloney.

Myrtle Beach RHP Nick Martinez (4-3), despite tossing a quality start, was hit with the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks, while garnering eight strikeouts.

Potomac struck first in the 2nd inning as the leadoff walk issued to C Adrian Nieto came in to score on an RBI single ripped through the hole at second base by DH Francisco Soriano. RF Randolph Oduber, who laced a single into right field to get aboard, was plated on a run scoring single to the opposite field in left by LF Billy Burns.

Nieto lead off the 6th inning with a double cranked into the right field corner and scored on an errant throw by SS Luis Sardinas on a groundball hit by 3B Justin Miller.

Individual runs came home in the 8th and 9th for Potomac on an RBI single by Oduber sent into right field and an RBI bloop double up the right field chalk for CF Michael Taylor, respectively.

Potomac RHP Richie Mirowski (H 2) was stellar out of the bullpen in back of Ray's terrific outing and striking out three in 1.1 innings.
