Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CT -- Brian Rodney scored the game-clinching goal in the shootout and Justin Peters made 34 saves as the Albany River Rats defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-1 in a shootout, Tuesday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Albany won the shootout 2-0 as the Sound Tigers fell to 22-20-2-4 on the season. Greg Moore scored the Sound Tigers goal.

Steven Goertzen put the River Rats on the board 5:45 into the game. After Nathan Lawson stopped an initial shot by Jonathan Paiement, Goertzen collected the rebound and snapped a shot into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.

The Sound Tigers best scoring chance in the first period came when Peters made a pad save on a wrap-around attempt by Robin Figren. Meanwhile, Lawson made two excellent glove saves on Albany's Jerome Samson and Zach Boychuk.

Moore tied the game for Bridgeport at the 6:06 mark of the third period. Mark Flood carried the puck behind the net and dished a pass to Moore at the side of the net where he one-timed a shot top shelf for his 10th goal of the season.

The Sound Tigers had a chance to take the lead midway through the third period but Peters stopped a slap-shot from Jesse Joensuu, who came through the slot untouched. In the final minutes of the third, Peters turned aside a Matt Martin breakaway and then stopped the ensuing scoring chance on the rebound as well.

Early in overtime, Mark Wotton tried to stuff the puck through Peters' legs but the Albany goaltender stacked his pads and made the save. Moments later, Joensuu deflected a shot by Mark Katic just wide of the goal.

Jacob MicFlicker opened the shootout for the River Rats. Lawson made a pad save on his shot and the puck trickled towards the goal line, coming to rest directly on the line. Greg Mauldin had a similar chance in the third round for Bridgeport as his shot stopped right on the goal line as well.

The shootout remained scoreless until the fourth round when Drayson Bowman put a shot through Lawson's legs to give the River Rats the lead. After Peters stopped Martin's attempt, Rodney fired a shot through Lawson's pads to win the game for Albany.

"We are playing hard," Sound Tigers Head Coach Jack Capuano said. "Eventually, I would like to see the team get rewarded for its effort and work ethic."

The Sound Tigers outshot the River Rats 35-33. Lawson made 32 saves in the loss.

The Sound Tigers are back in action Friday night when they open a weekend series against the Portland Pirates at 7:00 pm at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Bridgeport returns home Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm as the Sound Tigers host the Norfolk Admirals. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
