The teams skated through a scoreless first period, with Windsor outshooting the Rangers 10-8 headed into intermission. Spitfires forward Brady Vail was awarded a penalty shot midway through the first period but was turned aside by Kitchener goaltender Franky Palazzese.
Windsor broke the deadlock six minutes into the middle frame when second-year winger Ben Johnson slid a shot under Palazzese to record his fourth of the season. Rookie Josh Ho-Sang and new Spitfire Trevor Murphy were credited with the assists.
The Rangers pulled even with just over four minutes to play in the period. With Domenic Alberga providing the screen in front of the net, rearguard Evan McEneny sailed a point shot past Jaroslav Pavelka. The Vancouver Canucks prospect has three goals and eight assists this season. Draft-eligible Rangers Jared Gilbert and Brent Pedersen assisted on the play.
The Rangers led shots on goal 12-8 in the second period.
Kitchener jumped in front 2-1 just 67 seconds into the final frame. Justin Bailey converted a cross ice feed from Matia Marcantuoni into his sixth goal of the season and second against the Spitfires. Gilbert earned his second point of the night with an assist on the play.
The Spitfires responded with a goal off the stick of Chris Marchese, his seventh of the campaign. The third-year forward was on the receiving end of a quick pass from Ho-Sang and snapped it over the left pad of Palazzese. Jordan Maletta was credited with the second assist.
The teams remained knotted at 2-2 through the remainder of the third period, sending the contest into overtime. The Ranger out-shot Windsor 18-9 in the final frame and finished regulation with a 38-28 advantage on the shot clock.
Overtime resolved nothing and the game went to a shootout. The Spitfires out-shot Kitchener 4-2 in the extra frame.
Eric Ming scored the winner in the sixth round of the shootout, pushing the Rangers to a 3-2 win. Palazzese stopped 30 shots and four Windsor shooters to secure his fifth straight victory.
The win was the Rangers' 11th in 13 home contests and improves the team's record to 16-8-1-1.
