Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Crestwood, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies dropped the opener of a three-game series against the Windy City ThunderBolts on Friday night, 4-2.
Windy City (28-30) used a three-run second inning against Gateway starter Adam Eggnatz (2-4) to pull ahead early. The Grizzlies (29-31) would get a couple of the runs back but never tie the game.
In the second, Eggnatz allowed back-to-back singles to begin the frame as Ransom LaLonde and Charley Thurber reached base. Taylor Smart then laced a single to left field that was bobbled by Cody Livesay in left field, allowing LaLonde to come home with Windy City's first run.
With one out and the bases loaded later in the inning, Coco Johnson stepped in and hit a two-run single into centerfield. The knock gave Windy City a 3-0 edge.
LHP Jake Fisher (6-4) started for the ThunderBolts and would hold the Grizzlies scoreless through the first four innings. In the fifth, Gateway struck when Seth Heck blooped an RBI single into right field to make it 3-1.
The Grizzlies continued to rally in the sixth against Fisher. Brandon Thomas started things with a double and would cross home later as Ben Waldrip ripped a run-scoring single into right field. After Gateway trimmed the deficit to 3-2, the ThunderBolts turned to a bullpen that would shut down Gateway's offense from that point forward.
RHP Austin Demotte, RHP Zach Westcott, and RHP Cameron Giannini combined to throw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. RHP Brian Loconsole allowed a hit but no runs in the ninth as he picked up the save.
Gateway's bullpen was a bright spot, as RHP Jordan Wellander worked out of a jam in the sixth inning to strand two runners on-base and would throw 1.2 solid frames in relief. RHP Will LaMarche also chipped in with 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Grizzlies will try to even the series on Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium. Gateway sends RHP Will Landsheft (3-5, 4.77 ERA) to the mound while Windy City counters with RHP Clay Chapman (6-3, 2.77 ERA). First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
Fans can listen to the game on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Saturday on 1400 AM KJFF, 94.3 FM/1570 AM WBGZ, or online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
