Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers rebounded after losing a late lead to collect a 9-8 extra-innings win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks in front of 9,105 fans at RedHawks Field on Friday.
With the scored tied at 8-8 with one out in the 10th inning, infielder Dustin Ackley grounded into a force out that scored Franklin Gutierrez from third base and ultimately led the Rainiers to their second consecutive win and a series split with the RedHawks.
The late-inning heroics were necessitated after Oklahoma City erased an 8-4 Rainiers lead by scoring four runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Brian Dopirak and Oswaldo Navarro both hit RBI-singles in the seventh, with Brain Barnes' triple and a single from Drew Locke driving home two more in the eighth.
The Rainiers were in control the majority of the game thanks in large part to powerful performances from Mike Carp and Alex Liddi. The outfielder Carp went deep twice in the outing, hitting a three-run homer in the first and then delivering a solo shot in the fifth. Liddi hit his team-leading eighth home run and the second over his last two games with a two-run blast in the third.
Despite blowing a save opportunity in the eighth, reliever Denny Bautista (1-2) picked up the win after surrendering two runs, one earned, on three hits over two innings of work. Right-hander Josh Lueke picked up his team-leading third save of the season after allowing one hit with one strikeout over a scoreless inning in the 10th.
Starter Luke French tossed 5.1 innings against the RedHawks, surrendering four runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Rainiers (14-22) begin the second leg of their eight-game road trip at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday when the club plays the first game of a four-game series at New Orleans. Tacoma sends right-hander Blake Beavan (1-1, 5.26) to the mound in the series opener against Zephyrs right-hander Jay Buente (2-0, 1.26). The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
