Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers stumbled late and fell to the Reno Aces 4-3 in front 3,805 fans at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.
Tacoma, holding on to a 3-2 lead, surrendered a two-run double to second baseman Mark Hallberg with one out in the eighth inning that sent the Rainiers to a series-opening loss.
The Rainiers rallied earlier in the outing, coming back to erase a 2-1 Aces advantage with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Infielder Matt Mangini tied the game with a line drive double that scored Ryan Langerhans from first base. Shortstop Alex Liddi drove in the go-ahead run with a single that cleared the way for Mangini to safely head home one batter later.
Outfielder Ryan Langerhans extended his hit streak to 20 games after going 2-for-3, including a first-inning lead-off home run that gave the Rainiers an early 1-0 advantage. Langerhans has now reached base safely in each of his last 26 appearances dating back to June 1.
Reno reliever Jordan Norberto (6-1) earned the win, tossing a scoreless inning over the seventh and eighth with one walk and one strikeout. Right-hander Josh Lueke was dealt the loss (2-4) after allowing both the Aces runs on two hits in the eighth inning.
Rainiers starter Charlie Haeger turned in his strongest start of the season on Thursday night. The knuckleballer held the Aces to two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings of work, with six walks and six strikeouts.
The Rainiers (43-45) play the second game of their four-game series with the Aces (51-35) on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Luke French (5-6, 6.09) is scheduled to take the mound for Tacoma against Reno right-hander Gaby Hernandez (2-2, 9.00). The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
