Cleburne Railroaders News Release
CLEBURNE, Texas - The Cleburne Railroaders have resigned RHP Cortland Cox, the club announced Saturday.
The flame-throwing reliever appeared in 37 games with the Railroaders in 2017, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.96 ERA over 51.2 innings before his contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels ahead of spring training. He also struck out 66 batters, an average of 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
"I'm very excited about having Cortland Cox back on the team this year," pitching coach Ed Pruitt said. "He's going to be a great contribution to our bullpen. He's a great middle-relief/set-up man who closes the door and sets up our closer. He was a key factor in the second half last year, and I expect him to do the same this year."
Cox earned American Association Pitcher of the Week honors in early August after throwing 7.2 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts and no walks in two relief appearances. At times, he was one of the most effective relievers in the league.
The 23-year-old spent four seasons in the Cleveland Indians organization after he was selected in the 32nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Riverside (CA) Community College. In his career, he owns an 18-9 record with a 3.37 ERA in 106 appearances - 104 of those in relief.
The Railroaders open their second season with a three-game series against the two-time defending champion Winnipeg Goldeyes May 18 at The Depot. Single-game tickets are on sale now by visiting www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 945-8705.
