RailRiders Fall to PawSox in Extras
April 4, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Pawtucket Red Sox used a five-run 10th inning to spoil the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' opening of the re-imagined PNC Field, defeating the home side by a score of 8-4.
The RailRiders wasted no time scoring in their new digs, as they pushed across two runs in the first inning. With one out, Corban Joseph recorded the first base hit in the new PNC Field to begin the rally. After a walk to Zoilo Almonte and a strikeout by Dan Johnson, Melky Mesa singled to left-center field to drive home Joseph, and move Almonte to second. After a walk to Cody Johnson loaded the bases, Pawtucket starter Steven Wright, a knuckleballer by trade, had problems locating his pitches and a wild one got away from catcher Ryan Lavarnway, plating Almonte from third. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre led 2-0 after the first.
The game remained even until the top of the fifth, when the Red Sox were able to get to RailRiders starter Vidal Nuno. Bryce Brentz led the inning off with a double, and he was able to quickly return to the dugout after Brandon Snyder homered to right field, tying the game at two. Two outs later, Sam Demel relieved Nuno, and issued a walk to Jonathan Diaz. Diaz proceeded to steal second, and score on a base hit by Brock Holt. The Red Sox led 3-2 after four and a half innings.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre evened the score in the seventh. Dan Johnson led off with a walk, and after Mesa struck out, Johnson moved to third on a single by Cody Johnson. Austin Romine walked to load the bases, and Thomas Neal tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The game remained tied and went into extra innings, but Pawtucket opened it up in the 10th. With one out, Jeremy Hazelbaker launched a solo home run to right field. After Drew Sutton walked and stole second, Lavarnway doubled to right, plating Sutton. Brentz followed up with a double of his own, scoring Lavarnway. He moved to third on a fielding error by the left fielder Almonte. One out later, Justin Henry capped the scoring with a two-run home run to right, giving Pawtucket the 8-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the 10th, the RailRiders began the inning by loading the bases after singles by Gil Velazquez and Adams, and a walk to Joseph. With Almonte batting, a wild pitch plated Velazquez. Anthony Carter limited the damage, and was able to escape without further damage as the RailRiders fell to the Red Sox in 10 innings, 8-4.
Alex Wilson (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and was awarded with the win for Pawtucket. Jim Miller (0-1) worked the 10th inning for the RailRiders and was handed the loss.
