Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. Josh Carter's run-scoring single in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Calgary Vipers defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-3 on Wednesday night in a game shortened by rain to eight innings. The game featured a two hour and 20 minute rain delay in the top of the eighth inning before the contest resumed through the completion of the inning. Heavy rain again made its way to U. S. Steel Yard, preventing the resumption.

Calgary won two of three in the series and dropped the RailCats to 8-11 in the second half. Gary split six games on the homestand.

The RailCats got on the board first and broke a 21 inning scoreless drought in the third inning. Ryan Graham led off the inning with an infield single and Jermaine Allensworth launched a two-out home run to left, his fourth of the year, to give the RailCats a 2-0 lead.

Calgary came back with a run in the fourth on a lead-off triple by Nelson Castro followed by a single by Manubu Kuramuchi to make it 2-1. The Vipers took the lead in the fifth when Jeff Butts singled with one out and went to second on a single by Castro. Kuramochi singled to left and Steve Haake bobbled the ball, allowing Butts to score, and then Haake's throw back to infield was wild as Castro scored to make it 3-2. Haake was charged with two errors on the play.

The RailCats tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Graham singled, went to second on a hit by Mike Coles, to third on Jay Pecci's fly out to right, and scored on Jermaine Allensworth's safety squeeze bunt to make it 3-3.

But Calgary jumped back ahead in the sixth off RailCats reliever Ryan Brandt (2-2). Brandon Rogers led off the inning with a base hit and was sacrificed to second by Drew Miller. After Sam Rosario struck out, Carter singled to left and Haake bobbled the ball to take away any chance of a play at the plate on Rogers, who scored from second.

Gary did not advance a runner past first base the rest of the way.

The RailCats are back in action Friday night at Edmonton at 8:05 p.m. as Jason Shelley (8-5, 3.69) gets the start. The RailCats next home game is August 11th vs. Fargo-Moorhead.
