Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (34-31) tallied four hits and two walks to score five runs in the 6th inning on the way to a series-clinching victory against the Kansas City T-Bones (29-36). The five runs were all the Cats would need, as their pitching staff held KC's bats in check in the 7-3 win.
RailCats starting pitcher Richard Castillo was calm in front of 3,898 fans and 88-degree heat on Wednesday night. The right-hander pitched 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Castillo allowed base runners in every inning except the 5th, but was able to prevent the big inning.
The T-Bones struck first in the 4th inning. Vladimir Frias, Dalton Wheat and Brian Erie laced consecutive singles to produce the game's initial run.
The RailCats offense responded in the next half inning with a tying run. John Holland led off with a walk and advanced to second on a fly ball. The Mississippi State product came home to score on an RBI single from Cameron Newell.
Gary SouthShore grabbed the lead and more in the 6th. The RailCats totaled four hits and two walks off of three different pitchers to score five runs and blow the game open. Alex Crosby, Jose Gonzalez, Holland and Newell provided the RBIs to make the game 6-1.
Castillo struggled after sitting for the long top half of the 6th inning. He was pulled after recording two outs but giving up two runs in the frame. Santiago Rodriguez came out of the bullpen to strike out Brett Wiley with two runners on base and get out of the inning.
The RailCats added another run in the 7th for good measure. Frank Martinez got on base with an infield base hit and scored on a Crosby fielder's choice. The bullpens shut down the teams the rest of the way to solidify the final score of 7-3.
Chase Harris, Martinez and Crosby each had multi-hit days while Crosby and Newell each contributed two RBIs. Lars Liguori and Jorge de Leon joined Rodriguez in throwing scoreless relief. The RailCats won the series 2-1 and improved to 5-1 in rubber matches.
The RailCats venture south to Amarillo to start a series with the Texas AirHogs. The four-game set is the last series before the All-Star break. First pitch is at 7:05 with coverage beginning at 6:40 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com
