RailCats Overcome Six-Run Deficit to Shock RedHawks

June 16, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The RailCats scored eight runs in the seventh inning and Mike Massaro hit a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth as Gary (14-13) overcame a six-run deficit to stun Fargo 14-11 in Sunday's rubber match. The victory was the biggest come-from-behind win for the RailCats since August 15, 2010, when they rallied from eight runs down to beat Lake County at home.

With one out in the ninth, Adam Klein hit a liner to left that Buddy Sosnoskie tried to catch on a dive. It went past him and all the way to the wall for a triple. The next batter, Massaro laced a go-ahead RBI single to center, giving the RailCats a 12-11 lead. Later in the inning, Danny Pulfer drew a bases-loaded walk and Brian Kolb hit a sac fly to make it 14-11. Clay Zavada (2-1) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the win.

Gary entered the seventh inning trailing 9-3 as reliever Pete Levitt took over on the mound for the RedHawks. After there was one out, the RailCats strung together six straight hits. Cristian Guerrero singled, Craig Maddox doubled and Pulfer hit a two-run single for his third hit of the game. Kolb doubled before Drew Martinez hit an infield single to drive in another run. Zac Mitchell followed with a two-run double to the gap in right to cut the lead to one.

Chase Tucker walked and with two out Massaro reached on an error on the first baseman to load the bases. Guerrero stepped up and hammered the first pitch to center field for a bases-clearing double, giving the RailCats the 11-9 lead and setting a franchise record for Guerrero. The three RBI made Guerrero the RailCats all-time career RBI leader with 277, passing Steve Haake's mark of 275. Gary had eight runs on seven hits and sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

Fargo-Moorhead responded in the bottom of the frame against RailCats reliever Ian Durham. Nic Jackson and Tim Alberts hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to tie the game at 11.

The RedHawks hit three consecutive singles to start the first inning off of RailCats starter Morgan Coombs. Cleanup hitter Alberts unloaded the bases with a grand slam to left to give Fargo-Moorhead a 4-0 lead before there were any outs in the first.

Keith Brachold hit a two-out, two-run homer in the second to extend the lead to 6-0.

The RailCats cut into the deficit against RedHawks' starter Taylor Stanton in the fourth inning. Maddox, Pulfer and Kolb hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Martinez followed with a sac fly and Tucker added another sac fly. Klein hit a two-out RBI single to center to trim the lead to 6-3.

Fargo loaded the bases on a double, an error and a walk to start the fifth. Buddy Sosnoskie hit a sac fly to right to give the RedHawks a 7-3 lead. With two out and Taylor Sewitt on in relief, Mitch Einertson ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make it 9-3. The three runs in the inning were all unearned after an error by shortstop Zac Mitchell.

Coombs was charged for nine runs, six earned in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out six in the no-decision. Fargo spoiled a quality start by Stanton, who held the 'Cats to three runs in six innings. Joe Harris (2-3) was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run.

The RailCats pounded out a season-high 14 runs and 21 hits. Every batter had a hit and scored, and every batter besides Tucker had multiple hits. Guerrero extended his hit streak to 12 in a row.

The RailCats begin a four-game series in Wichita on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Will Krout (1-3, 5.87) will start for the RailCats against Wichita right-hander Jon Link. The radio broadcast can be heard on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and www.railcatsbaseball.com.
