Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats announced today they signed outfielder Chase Harris. The RailCats traded outfielder Matt Petrone to the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League for future considerations.
Harris began the season with the RailCats division-rivals, the Lincoln Saltdogs. In Nebraska the right-hander hit .191 over 25 games. He managed one double, four RBIs and three stolen bases. The 24 year-old had a .282 on-base percentage in his stint with the Dogs. He will get a chance to face off against his former team tonight and tomorrow as the RailCats host the Saltdogs.
The native of Boise, Idaho was a 14th round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014. Harris spent two years in the Phillies' system bouncing between rookie ball, Class A and high A. Between the three leagues, Harris hit .250 with a .307 on-base percentage. He hit three triples, 11 doubles and registered 31 RBIs.
Harris was a college star at the University of New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference. The outfielder hit .377 with 63 RBIs as a senior in 2014. He tallied eight home runs, five triples and 13 stolen bases. Harris was earned three All-America nominations, with second-team by the NCBWA being the highest. He started every game in right field and hit third in the lineup each time out. He led the team in nine offensive categories. Harris finished his career with 117 straight starts.
Before his two years as a Lobo, Harris excelled in two seasons at the College of Southern Idaho. His sophomore season at Southern Idaho he hit .407 and was the Region 18 Player of the Year. Harris attended Centennial High School in Boise.
Petrone joined the RailCats via a trade with the Sonoma Stompers of the Pacific Association on June 13th. He heads to Schaumburg after hitting .188 in 36 games. The lefty totaled four doubles and one home run in his 112 at bats. Petrone hit the go-ahead home run in Lincoln on Father's Day, June 19th. He also hit a walk-off single in extra-innings at home against Wichita on July 10th. Despite his low average, Petrone held a .348 on-base percentage due to his 23 walks.
The 15th season of RailCats Baseball continues tonight at US Steel Yard against the Lincoln Saltdogs. The RailCats are 4.5 games out of first place and hold a 31-29 record.
