Rail Yard Dawgs Game Notes: Rail Yard Dawgs (22-21-4) vs Mayhem (26-16-5)

March 16, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release

LAST TIME OUT: Brad Barone stopped 29 of 30 shots faced, Steve Mele had a goal and an assist and John Gustafsson scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the third period as the Rail Yard Dawgs squeaked past the Macon Mayhem, 2-1, Thursday night at Berglund Center.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Rail Yard Dawgs returned home on Thursday for their first game at Berglund Center since February 17, a 2-1 shootout win over Huntsville. Roanoke greeted its home fans with a victory and improved to 12-11-1 at home. The Dawgs have now won five straight games at home. They last lost a home game on February 2 when Knoxville snuck out of town with a 3-2 win.

STANDINGS WATCH: After Thursday's win, the Rail Yard Dawgs find themselves in a tie for seventh place in the SPHL, even with the Mississippi RiverKings with 48 points. The Dawgs trail the sixth-place Evansville Thunderbolts by three points and are three points clear of the ninth-place Birmingham Bulls. Roanoke is even with Mississippi, Evansville and Birmingham in games played. The Dawgs have no games remaining against Mississippi or Evansville and will play their final scheduled game against the Bulls on the road on Saturday.

FAMILIAR FOE: Roanoke and Macon will finish out their season series on Friday with their seventh game against one another. The Rail Yard Dawgs lead the series, having gone 4-2-0 in the six previous meetings including a 2-0-0 mark at home. Friday's game is also the third of three games in the span of eight days that the two teams will have played against one another. Roanoke beat Macon, 5-2, in Macon on March 9 to start that stretch.

HOT TO THE MAX(ime): Maxime Guyon stayed hot in his first home game as a Rail Yard Dawg as he recorded two assists in the 2-1 win on Thursday. Guyon has now played in seven games for Roanoke and has put up five goals and six assists. The Quebec native has recorded a point in every game but one and has registered two points one five separate occasions.

ROSTER NEWS: Defenseman Paul Fregeau was signed to a three-game contract prior to Thursday's game. Fregeau had previously played two games with the Dawgs at the beginning of the month. A rookie who recently completed his college career at Cortland State, Fregeau also has played three games with the FHL's Watertown Wolves where he has a goal and three assists.

SELECTIVE SHOOTERS: Roanoke was outshot by Macon, 30-16, during Thursdays 2-1 win. 16 shots was the lowest total for the Dawgs in a game this season and their two shots on net in the first also represented a season low. Roanoke has outshot its opponent only once in its last 13 games but has gone 10-2-1 during that stretch.

UP NEXT: The Rail Yard Dawgs close out their three-in-three stretch on Saturday on the road against the Birmingham Bulls. Puck drop at the Pelham Civic Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
