Raiders Can't Overcome Slow Start In Brandon

February 17, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Brandon, MB - The Prince Albert Raiders (23-24-9-2) peppered Logan Thompson with shots, but he and the Brandon Wheat Kings (31-22-3-2) edged the Raiders 4-3 on Saturday night at Westoba Place.

Thompson turned aside 39 of the 42 shots he faced to earn the win and the game's first star.

The Raiders weren't able to recover from giving up three goals in the opening period. Ty Lewis opened the scoring 26 seconds into the contest, followed by Marcus Sekundiak two minutes later. Ty Ettinger beat Curtis Meger with 5:29 to play in the opening contest to make it a 3-0 game after the opening 20 minutes despite the Raiders outshooting the Wheat Kings 15-5 in the period.

In the second, the Raiders climbed back into the game on an extended five-on-three power play. With both Ettinger and Cole Reinhardt in the box for high sticking, Jordy Stallard snapped a shot past Thompson to get his team on the board. Just over a minute later, Brett Leason converted a back-door pass from Max Martin to make it a 3-2 game.

The Raiders continued to pressure Thompson and the Wheat Kings, but the overage goaltender kept Prince Albert at bay for the rest of the frame.

Early in the third, the Wheat Kings re-established their two-goal lead 2:15 into the third when Rylan Bettens walked in from the wing and beat Meger. That goal ended Meger's night. The Regina product stopped six of the 10 shots that he faced.

With 6:21 remaining, the Raiders brought the game back within one when Spencer Moe jammed a rebound past Thompson.

However, it was as close the Raiders came. Thompson kept the Raiders off the board for the rest of the game, including the final moments when Ian Scott left for the extra attacker.

With the loss, the Raiders are still four points back of Saskatoon for the final wild card spot with a game at hand.

The Raiders are back at home on Monday afternoon for their Family Day game against the Regina Pats. Puck drop is 4 p.m. For all of the details regarding our Family Day game, visit raiderhockey.com. Tickets are available online or at the box office beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday morning.
