Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, OH--Akron Racers GM Joey Arrietta announced today that the Racers have dealt Two-Time All-NPF selection, shortstop Jill Barrett, to the Chicago Bandits. The deal sends the Bandits first round pick, #4 overall, to the Racers, stacking the #3 and #4 selections in the very first round of the 2016 NPF Draft. The deal also includes outfielder, A. J. Andrews, the #7 overall selection from the 2015 NPF Draft. The Racers pick up the 31st selection from Chicago in a three-for-one trade.
"This trade was crucial in our commitment to returning to the NPF Title game," explains Arrietta. "This move was clearly about putting the Racers in a better position to do just that." Akron will have back-to-back selections in the very first round of the 2016 NPF Draft. The Racers will be in an enviable position to grab three of the Top 10 players in the draft at #3, #4 and #10.
A.J. Andrews will join former Tiger and current Racers' pitcher, Rachele Fico next summer in Akron. Andrews provides Akron with the much needed speed and skills to ignite the Racers offense. Andrews finished her collegiate career at LSU with 179 runs scored, 237 hits, 116 walks, 19 triples and 97 stolen bases in the most competitive conference (SEC) in the country the past four years. Her runs scored, triples, walks and stolen bases rank third overall in LSU history.
"I am extremely excited to have acquired AJ Andrews in this trade, "noted Arrietta. "Actually, AJ was the key to getting this deal done."
Arrietta drafted Barrett, the former Tulsa grad, in the fourth round (17th overall) of the 2014 draft. Barrett quickly established herself as a fixture in the Racers lineup as a rookie. She hit .339 in 2015 collecting a league-leading 56 hits and scoring 26 runs. Barrett was named to the All-NPF squad recording the best performance by a shortstop in a league dominated by superior players that include the Bandits, Tammy Williams.
