Charlotte Knights News Release
TOLEDO, OH-- Ryan Raburn was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fifth round of the 2001 draft. Nearly 16 years later, the former Detroit star helped the Charlotte Knights beat his former organization.
Raburn ripped a game-high three hits -- including a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth inning -- to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 2-1 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday in the opening game of their three-game series from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH. The win was Charlotte's first on the road this season.
Signed by the Chicago White Sox on April 8 and assigned to Charlotte, Raburn, 36, had his best game of the 2017 season on Tuesday. The Tampa, FL native, who played for the Mud Hens in parts of seven seasons, paced the offense with three hits and an RBI. In the top of the ninth -- with the game knotted at 1-1 and runners on the corners -- Raburn roped a single up the middle to score Willy Garcia for the go-ahead run. It proved to be enough for the Knights to earn the win in the series opener.
RHP Carson Fulmer started and struck-out eight batters over six solid innings, but did not factor in the decision. The Vanderbilt University product threw 112 pitches and allowed just one run on the night. He left it in the hands of the bullpen, who dominated the âHens over the final three innings.
RHP Juan Minaya, who was added to Charlotte's roster on Tuesday on a major league rehab assignment from Chicago, pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning. LHP David Holmberg (3-0, 0.00) followed and was sharp over a scoreless eighth inning to earn his third win of the season. Holmberg has not allowed a run in 10.2 innings pitched this season. RHP Brad Goldberg allowed one hit in the ninth but shut the door for his first save of the season.
Offensively, the Knights tallied a total of 10 hits en route to their fourth win over their last six games. Nicky Delmonico continued his hot hitting. The 24-year-old recorded two hits and extended his hit streak to six games. He has 12 hits over that six-game stretch. Danny Hayes reached base three times -- all on walks.
The Knights scored their second and final run in the top of the ninth inning off former Charlotte reliever Arcenio Leon (0-1, 1.29), who was charged with the loss. Toledo starter Warwick Saupold did not factor in the decision after six shutout innings of work.
The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday with the middle game of the series. RHP Lucas Giolito (0-2, 6.43) will get the start against LHP Chad Bell (0-2, 1.72). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. from Toledo, OH.
