Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have lost four of their last five games, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers 5-4 in front of a sold-out crowd of over 4,700 on Saturday night at LoanMart Field.

The Quakes scored four unanswered runs in the late innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome their five-run deficit. They were out-hit by Inland Empire 9-6.

Inland Empire scored four of their five runs in the fourth inning off of Quakes starter Grant Holmes. The bases became loaded with nobody out after Zach Welz singled, Hutton Moyer walked and Taylor Ward reached on an error by third baseman Matt Beaty. Up came Michael Strenz, and Holmes got ahead of him 0-2, but then hit him with a pitch to bring home Welz and reload the bases. Zach Houchins then hit into a fielder's choice that brought home Moyer to make it 2-0 66ers. Jeff Boehm hit an RBI single and Ryan Sebra hit an RBI groundout to score Ward and Houchins to make it 4-0 Inland Empire in the fourth inning.

Inland Empire scored another run off of Holmes in the fifth. Tim Arakawa led of the inning with a single, and then Welz followed with a double to knock in Arakawa and put the 66ers in front 5-0.

Rancho began to claw their way back in the sixth inning. Jordan Tarsovich led off the frame with a single, and Erick Mejia clobbered a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 5-2. It was Mejia's second home run of the season and his first since April 19th.

Rancho continued to rally in the seventh inning by scoring two more runs. Joey Curletta and Devan Ahart hit back-to-back singles with one out, and they both scored after a two-run triple by Jordan Tarsovich. That cut the 66ers lead to 5-4, but the Quakes comeback bid ended there,in front of the sold-out crowd at LoanMart Field.

Grant Holmes (4-3) is charged with the loss for Rancho Cucamonga. He pitched six innings and allowed five run (three earned) on seven hits. The bullpen continued it's stellar work this home stand with a combined three scoreless innings from Bubby Rossman (2 IP) and Jeff Malm (1 IP). The Quakes bullpen has allowed just two earned runs in 13.1 innings through the first four games on this home stand.

The win goes to Alex Klonowski (4-6). He beats Rancho Cucamonga for the second straight start, having also earned the win against the Quakes on May 15th. He pitched six innings and allowed just two runs on three hits, striking out six. Ronnie Much allowed two earned runs in one inning in relief, and Adam Hofacket nailed down his second save for Inland Empire by throwing two scoreless and hitting innings, striking out three.

Rancho Cucamonga (33-23), drops to a half-game outside first place, pending the outcome of High Desert's game at Lake Elsinore, which was currently tied 4-4 in extra-innings at the time of this publication. Inland Empire improves to 19-37 with the win. Saturday was the first time Inland Empire beat Rancho Cucamonga at LoanMart Field this season, and just the second time they beat the Quakes overall (Rancho leads the season series 9-2).
