Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Adelanto, CA-- The Quakes came up a run short for a second straight game in High Desert, as the Mavericks held off the Quakes on Sunday evening by a score of 6-5 at Heritage Field.

Mike Ahmed's seventh-inning homer pulled Rancho to within a run, but that's as close as they'd get, as they dropped their second straight one-run game. Rancho's last five losses have all come by just a single run, including all four on the current 3-4 road trip.

Ahmed had another chance to be the hero in the ninth, as Matt Beaty singled with two outs to extend the game. Mavs' reliever Cody Palmquist, who had come on in the seventh, got Ahmed to fly out to center field to end the game and earn his third save of the year.

The Mavs gained control of the game in the early-going, as Quakes' starter Yaisel Sierra struggled with his command, allowing the Mavericks to load the bases in the second inning without the aid of a hit. Michael De Leon and Jose Cardona each followed with a two-run double, putting High Desert up 4-0 after two innings.

Rancho slowly climbed back into Sunday's game, as Johan Mieses doubled home Ahmed in the fourth, making it 4-1.

An Erick Mejia RBI double and an Ahmed sac fly pulled Rancho to within a run in the fifth, as the Quakes made it 4-3.

Sierra (4-5), who had settled down nicely after the four-run second, was victimized by the High Desert wind in the bottom of the inning though. With two outs, he allowed a wind-aided pop-fly for a double, then allowed a two-run homer to David Lyon, giving High Desert a 6-3 lead.

Ahmed's second homer of the series and ninth of the year off reliever and eventual winner Jeffrey Springs (2-0) made it 6-5 in the seventh.

Rancho (10-8, 52-36) falls one game back of Lancaster for the lead in the Second Half South Division standings with the loss. The Quakes will look for a four-game split of their series on Monday, as they send Tommy Bergjans (2-8) to the mound against a yet-to-be-named starter for High Desert. Game time on Monday will be 7:05pm.

After the Quakes' eight-game road trip, Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 13th for a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark. tickets are still available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
