July 12, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits entered play looking for their fourth straight win on Sunday evening, but fell behind 6-0 after two innings and lost by a 12-4 score as the Clinton LumberKings evened the three-game series at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (7-9, 37-49) still has an opportunity to win the series as the rubber match looms on Monday, taking a 3-1 record on the current homestand into the finale. Seven different Clinton (7-10, 47-40) hitters registered multi-hit games - led by Travis Howell's 4-for-5 night - while everybody in the lineup recorded at least one knock in the 18-hit barrage.

For the second straight night the River Bandits fell behind early thanks to a top of the first inning LumberKings rally. After Scott McGregor induced groundouts from each of the first two batters of the game, Clinton rattled off three consecutive two-out hits. Scott Savastano and Kris Sanchez each singled, while Denny Almonte stroked an opposite-field double to left that scored both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Quad Cities was able to overcome their early deficit on Saturday night, but the home team had no such luck on Sunday. The LumberKings went back to work in the second, as Travis Howell and Jake Shaffer opened the inning with singles and were bunted along to second and third. Daniel Carroll reached on an infield single that plated the first run of the inning. But the big blow came moments later, as Luis Nunez cranked a three-run homer to the left field berm, pushing the Clinton lead to 6-0 with his first home run of the year.

The River Bandits got on the board in the third. Frederick Parejo and Alex Castellanos delivered consecutive one-out singles and Jose Garcia's bouncer through the left side plated Parejo from second base. After a walk loaded the bases, Castellanos tried to score on a pitch in the dirt but was thrown out at the plate. Another walk loaded the sacks once again, but Jason Stidham's strikeout left Quad Cities trailing by a 6-1 score.

But that was as close as the River Bandits would get, as Clinton tacked on two more runs in each the fifth, eighth and ninth innings to take a commanding 12-1 lead.

Quad Cities did mount a quiet rally in the ninth, benefitting from three walks and three wild pitches by LumberKings' lefty Greg Moviel to plate three runs. But it was far too little, far too late in the 12-4 loss.

Matt Renfree (2-0) earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, taking over after three solid frames from starter Brett Lorin in his first action since returning from a groin pull.

McGregor (3-6) started but took the loss, roughed up for six runs on eight hits over three innings of work.

UP NEXT: The homestand concludes with a special 1:00 p.m. start time on Monday with a Summer Camp Day and Harry Potter Day! The River Bandits will then take Tuesday off before embarking on a six-game road trip to Dayton and Fort Wayne beginning on Wednesday.
