Pugliese Fans Career-High Nine to Seal Pelicans' Sixth Straight Win

WILMINGTON, Del. - James Pugliese struck out a career-high nine over six scoreless innings to lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 7-1 win Saturday over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium.

The win was the Pelicans' (76-55, 40-21) sixth in a row and 27th in the last 34 games.

Pugliese (6-5) allowed only two hits and two walks while tying a career-high with six innings. Daury Torrez worked two shutout innings of relief to finish off the win.

The Pelicans got the scoring going right away in the top of the first when Charcer Burks delivered a solo home run to left.

With two outs and Myrtle Beach leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Andrew Ely singled before reaching second on wild pickoff throw. Daniel Spingola followed by doubling to right to score Ely and make it 2-0.

After Wilmington (49-80, 22-39) starter Derek Gordon (2-2) worked two scoreless innings in the third and fourth, he issued a leadoff walk to Spingola in the top of the fifth. Tyler Pearson then singled before Burks did the same to score Spingola and push the Pelicans lead to 3-0.

With the Pelicans still up 3-0 in the top of the seventh, Burks started a two-out rally by drawing a walk. Donnie Dewees then singled in front of David Bote, who dropped a base hit into right to extend the Myrtle Beach lead to 4-0. After Ian Rice walked, Bryant Flete pulled a single into right to plate both Dewees and Bote and make it 6-0 Pelicans. Jesse Hodges followed with a single of his own to score Rice complete the rally at 7-0.

Bote's single extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games, the longest active streak in the Carolina League.

Austin Bailey got Wilmington on the board with a solo home run in bottom of the seventh.

The Pelicans will go for the sweep of the Blue Rocks during Sunday's 1:35 p.m. contest. RHP Erick Leal (10-4, 2.94 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start since July 15 for Myrtle Beach against Wilmington LHP Foster Griffin (4-9, 6.36 ERA).
