Mustangs Trample Cleveland, On Verge of Eastern Title
1/21/14 - The Cleveland Freeze brought the league's top offense and a six game winning streak to Chicago to face the undefeated Mustangs, but by the end of the first quarter all that was left of the Freeze was a puddle. Chicago surged to a 9-1 first quarter lead and improved to 10-0 with an improbable 20-11 victory.
If Cleveland came away with anything it was that they still have work to do to make a serious title run, but they outscored Chicago 9-7 in the second half once they got their legs under them.
It was just the second time a team reached the 20-goal mark in a game this year, and the first time it was Cleveland who put 27 on the board against the Illinois Piasa. Chicago can clinch the Eastern Division with any combination of two wins or two Cleveland losses. The Mustangs outscored the Freeze 33-15 in two meetings this year.
Player of the Week
Bryan Velazquez Moya, Chicago Mustangs
The second year player has been a key player for the Mustangs since their inception. The 20-year old has 37 goals and 10 assists in 25 games, including his five goal, two assist game leading Chicago to a 20-11 win over the Cleveland Freeze. Moya had three goals in the first quarter to set the tone and quickly put the game out of reach.
Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL
It Takes a Villa
The Mexico Toros took charge of the third playoff spot in the Pacific Division by beating Las Vegas last week and routing the Bay Area Rosal 17-7 on Sunday. The 6-5 Toros have been led once again by Gerardo Villa, who only appeared in one game last year after finishing second on the team in scoring in 2011-12. Villa has excelled in Tijuana where he has 21 goals and eight assists in six games. In five road games he has just seven points. Villa had six goals and two assists against Bay Area and is tied for the league lead with 26 goals.
Socks Turn Two
The San Diego Sockers took both weekend games from Bay Area and the Ontario Fury to extend their run to eight wins in their last nine games. San Diego is one of two teams with an undefeated road record. The Mustangs are 4-0, bested only by the Sockers 6-0 road mark.
Four Teams Postpone Golf Reservations
The Chicago Mustangs, Monterrey Flash, Las Vegas Legends, and San Diego Sockers all clinched playoff spots, leaving six more spots up for grabs. The Cleveland Freeze, Hidalgo La Fiera, and Dallas Sidekicks can each clinch a spot this weekend.
