Power vs. Legends - Game Notes - July 5, 2013

THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia was shutout for the second consecutive game, losing 3-0 to the Lexington Legends in front of a season high 5,104 fans. The Legends scored the only run off Power starter Jason Creasy in the third on an RBI double by Mark Threlkeld that plated Raul Mondesi Jr. Creasy finished the evening pitching five innings, allowing the one run on six hits while striking out two and walking a pair. Lexington added their final two runs in the eighth off the Power relievers.

OFFENSIVE WOES: The Power offense has struggled in the early stages of July, scoring only three runs in four games played, including being shut out in back-to-back games. Thursday's loss to Lexington was the first time the Power have been shut out in back-to-back games since August 26th vs Hickory and August 29th at Charleston. West Virginia is batting .187 this month after posting a .261 average in June. The Power are currently batting .264 as a team this season, which ranks second in the South Atlantic League behind the Asheville Tourists.

CAPACITY CROWD: Despite a rain delay that lasted an hour and 30 minutes, 5,104 fans flocked to Appalachian Power Park on July 4th. Yesterday's game was a single game high for West Virginia this year, shattering the previous high of 4,045 fans on May 29th. The best crowd to ever come to Appalachian Power Park was June 9th, 2005, when 10,103 fans came to the stadium.

SOUTH BOUND TRAIN: West Virginia continues their four-game series with the Lexington Legends, whose 10-5 record is the best in the Southern Division. This season, the Power are 4-5 against the Legends this season and are 22-18 against the entire Southern Division. West Virginia hasn't played anybody in the southern division since the Legends May 16-19. The Power will play 14 more games against members of the Southern Division this month and have 27 games remaining overall against the Southern Division.

BRADENTON BOUND: After Pat Ludwig was promoted Monday to Bradenton, a pair of Power infielders also received the call to the Marauders yesterday. Third baseman D.J. Crumlich appeared in 51 games for West Virginia, and batting .253 with 20 RBI. The 23-year-old committed six errors in the field. Middle infielder Ashley Ponce also joins Crumlich on the trip to Florida. The 22-year-old batted .244 in 36 games with West Virginia. However, Ponce showed good defense all season, committing only two errors.

NEW FACES IN CHARLESTON: West Virginia activated infielder Chris Diaz from the disabled list Thursday. Diaz appeared in nine games with the GCL Pirates this season, batting .240 with five RBI. The 11th round pick last year was promoted to the Power June 11th from the GCL then immediately placed on the DL. Along with Diaz, last season's 26th round selection Jimmy Rider has promoted from the Jamestown Roster. Rider played nine games with the Jammers at second and third, batting .207 with seven RBI.

POWER POINTS: Max Moroff has the current longest hitting streak at four games... Pittsburgh's third-ranked prospect Luis Heredia will make his next two starts on the road... Walker Gourley has reached base safely in 27 consecutive home games, dating back to April 19th.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Gerrit Cole suffered his first loss of his major league career at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies as the Pirates lost 6-4... Indianapolis blanked the Bats 4-0 at home in front of a sellout crowd at Victory Field... Carlos Paulino went 3-5 with two doubles and four RBI as Altoona routed Erie 15-7... Bradenton did not play yesterday... Jamestown scored four runs in the fifth to defeat Auburn 5-4 despite collecting being outhit by the Doubledays 7-3...
