Power vs. Intimidators - Game Notes - July 9, 2013
July 9, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia has not played a complete game since Friday. The Power and Lexington Legends had their game on Saturday suspended in the fifth inning. West Virginia scored first in the third when Dilson Herrera hit into a run-scoring groundout, plating Walker Gourley in the process. Lexington tied the game in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth before the game was suspended in the home half of the inning. On Sunday, rainfall created unplayable grounds, so Saturdayfs game could not be completed nor could the regularly scheduled contest get underway. The Power and Legends will complete Saturdayfs game and play Sundayfs contest later this season.
SLIDE AT FIVE: The Power enter play tonight on a five game losing streak, having not won since a ninth-inning rally at Lakewood on June 30. West Virginia is the only team in the league that has not won this month after having held the leaguefs best second half record entering play on July 1. The Power have a .190 team batting average during the skid and the leaguefs fourth highest earned run average during that span at 3.64.
INTIMIDATION FACTOR: Kannapolis holds a 45-41 edge in the all-time series against the Power, despite the fact that West Virginia took the first three meeting between the clubs earlier this season. The Power outscored the Intimidators 28-11 during the three game series from May 20-22 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. With the three May wins, West Virginia trails Kannapolis 23-22 in North Carolina during this series.
GIDDY-UP FOR THE K-MAN: Tyler Glasnow enters play tonight ranked second in the South Atlantic League with 103 strikeouts, trailing only Hickoryfs C.J. Edwards, who pitched on Friday. Each player has started 16 games this season, though the 21 year-old Rangers farmhand has pitched 10 and a third more innings than the 19 year-old Pirates prospect. Glasnow did not face Kannapolis when the Power and Intimidators met during the first half.
FAMILIAR ARMS? Of the seven pitchers the Power used against the Intimidators during their May series, only four are still with the Power. Orlando Castro and Joely Rodriguez were promoted to Bradenton at the SAL All-Star break, while Pat Ludwig was promoted last week.
TOSSED: Both manager Michael Ryan and utility man Walker Gourley were ejected on Friday night during the fifth inning. Each of the last eight times a Power staff member or player has been ejected from a game, West Virginia has been playing against Lexington, including five times this season.
CAPACITY CROWD: Despite a rain delay that lasted an hour and 30 minutes, 5,104 fans flocked to Appalachian Power Park on July 4th. Thursdayfs crowd marked a new single game high for West Virginia this year, surpassing the previous best of 4,045 fans on May 29th.
PROMO UPDATE: JULY 20- STATE CAPITAL REPLICA GIVEAWAY: The first 1,000 fans at Appalachian Power Park will receive a State Capital Replica presented by the WV Division of Rehabilitation as the Power take on the Kannapolis Intimidators at 7:05.
POWER POINTS: Max Moroff holds the clubfs longest current hitting streak at five games... Pittsburgh promoted Chris Diaz and Jimmy Rider from Jamestown to West Virginia on July 4. The moves were made to counter D.J. Crumlich and Ashley Poncefs promotions to Bradenton... Former Power first baseman Stetson Allie hit his first home run in High-A on Saturday night in walk-off fashion. Alliefs first home run with West Virginia was also a walk-off shot (April 7 vs. Asheville).
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh dropped itsf third straight, falling 2-1 to Oakland at PNC Park despite outhitting the Afs 9-3... Indianapolis scored five times in the top of the 12th for an 8-3 win at Columbus... Altoona tied their game against Erie with three in the eighth before allowing a run in the ninth during a 7-6 loss... Bradenton lost 1-0 against Charlotte. Joely Rodriguez took the loss and fell to 0-3 with the Marauders... Jamestown lost 2-1 at Batavia.
