Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power shut out the Greensboro Grasshoppers 5-0 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power snapped a two game losing streak by scoring three early runs and getting six strong innings from starter Melkin Laureano.

West Virginia took the early advantage against Greensboro's starting pitcher Matt Mongomery. With two outs in the first inning, Aaron Baker doubled to center, allowing Jesus Brito to score from first base. In the third, Baker singled in a pair of runs to build a 3-0 Power lead.

The Power added its final two runs in the sixth inning against the Grasshoppers bullpen. With the bases loaded, Adenson Chourio singled to drive in Josue Peley and Bengie Gonzalez. Chourio entered the game with two runs batted in this season and doubled that total in one night.

Three West Virginia pitchers combined to shut down the Greensboro offense on three hits, one walk, and one hit batter. Laureano (2-1) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing all three hits while striking out five. Maurice Bankston followed by retiring all six batters he faced, and Zach Foster completed the shutout by facing the minimum in the ninth. Montgomery (2-3) took the loss after surrendering the first three Power runs of the game.

Chourio led all batters with three hits, while Baker lead all players with three runs batted in. Baker and Peley also had multi-hit games for West Virginia, which earned its second shutout victory of the season. The Power blanked the Charleston River Dogs 2-0 on April 14. Three different players collected base hits for the Grasshoppers.

West Virginia and Greensboro play the third game of this four-game set on Wednesday evening at 7:05 pm. Hunter Strickland and Bryan Evans get the starts for the Power and Grasshopper, respectively.
