Power Gets past Lexington

(Lexington, KY) - The West Virginia Power edged the Lexington Legends 5-3 Monday night at Whitaker Bank Park. Mitchell Tolman's infield single in the top of the ninth drove in a pair to help the Power move a game over .500.

West Virginia opened the scoring in the top of the second. With two down and runners on the corners, tyler Filliben singled in Ryan Nagle for a 1-0 lead. Tito Polo worked the count full before doubling in Christian Kelley and Filliben to extend the edge to three runs.

Tanner Anderson was sharp over six innings in a spot start. The right-hander scattered five hits over six innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out five. The Legends scored once off Anderson in the home half of the fifth on a single and two errors.

In the bottom of the eighth, Lexington scored two off Power reliever Seth McGarry. DJ Burt drove in Ben Johnson with a sacrifice fly and Marten Gasparini hit a solo home run to even the score at three.

In the top of the ninth with two down, Filliben doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Polo walked and stole second. Tolman singled up the middle and off the second base bag to drive in Flliben and Polo to give West Virginia the lead back at 5-3.

McGarry (1-1) earned the win despite the blown save and Daniel Zamora pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Nik Stephenson (1-3) took the loss after allowing the two-run ninth. Polo, Tolman, Kelley and Filliben had multi-hit games to pace the Power in the series opening victory.

West Virginia and Lexington continue this series on Tuesday night with Gage Hinsz facing Gerson Garabito. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
